A 27-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday morning and booked on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse in the April 7 death of a 3-year-old child, police said.

Vick was home alone at her apartment with her 10-month-old child and the 3-year-old niece of Vick's live-in boyfriend, detectives said.

The boyfriend and Vick had physical custody of the niece since mid-March while the girl’s mother served a jail sentence, police said.

That afternoon, Ayrin called 911 to report that the child had “suddenly collapsed” and was not breathing, officers said. The child was rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where she died.

The child was found to be covered in bruises and it appeared chunks of her hair may have been pulled out, police said. She had black and blue bruising inside both ears and on her forehead and cheeks, a cut over her left eye, a healing burn or cut under her right eye, fingertip-size bruises covering her arms, chest and abdominal area, and a large area of bruising to the small of her back, according to police reports.

Forensic professionals and a subsequent autopsy concluded the bruising was the result of inflicted blunt force trauma, investigators said.

The cause of death was ruled as complications from blunt force trauma, and the manner of death a homicide, police said.

Vick claimed the child walked to the bathroom under her own power just prior to collapsing, police said.

Woman convicted of child abuse in Peoria death


A woman has been acquitted of negligent homicide but convicted of child abuse in the 2009 death of a Peoria girl in her care.

Maricopa County prosecutors say a jury returned the verdicts Monday in the case of 29-year-old Ayrin Vick. She's scheduled to be sentenced March 16.

This time it's 3-year-old Natalia Santillan, who had the nerve to have accidents in her pants. There, of course, could only be one reason that a three year old would engage in such behavior.She had to be doing it on purpose, right?

At least, that's what Peoria police report that Ayrin Amber Vick and her boyfriend Joe Ramirez thought. Text messages between the two suggested that they thought the child was lazy and unwilling to get up and go to the bathroom because she apparently didn't have accidents while in the company other people, according to court documents released Thursday. Little Natalia was living with her uncle and Vick, their 10-month old son Domick and Vick's eight-year-old daughter Alexis because her own mother was in prison. (No mention in the report of a father. What a shock.)
On April 7, Peoria police say Vick texted her boyfriend around noon to say that the child had had multiple accidents and that she "cannot handle it any more." Three hours later, police say she called 911 to report that Natalia had "suddenly collapsed" and wasn't breathing.The child was covered in bruises, including inside both ears, and had balding spots where her hair had been pulled out. She had a cut over her left eye and a burn in the process of healing under her right eye. She died an hour later at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

An autopsy showed that her small intestine had been severed and doctors concluded the injury could have come only from blunt-force trauma in the late-morning to noonish. Vick didn't summon help until 3:20 p.m.And here is perhaps the worst of the worst part -- doctors believe this child could have been saved had she gotten immediate medical attention.
