The fire was doused in 40 minutes by 75 firefighters from the Centerport, Halesite, Northport and Greenlawn departments, Ciafardoni said.
Halesite firefighters inspecting the house after fire found the cat cowering in a corner of the basement, he said.
Centerport and Halesite firefighters used a small mask to give the cat oxygen. The cat was taken to New York Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Farmingdale, where he was said to be doing fine on Monday night.
