Slocomb police recently charged an immigrant farm worker with molesting two Slocomb girls.
Assistant Geneva County District Attorney Stephen Smith said police investigators charged Jose Martin Silverio, 36, with a single-felony count of first-degree rape and two felony counts of sex abuse of a child under the age of 12.
“One girl was visiting another girl, and I think they were out riding their bikes,” Smith said. “I think he contends he was intoxicated ... and his memory apparently went blank. He grabbed and took them out into the woods.”
Smith said the sexual assaults were not random acts of violence, that the girls, ages 8 and 10, knew their assailant.
“He gave them $20 not to tell,” Smith said.
Slocomb Police Chief Don White said the assaults reportedly happened Wednesday morning in the Arrington Street community behind Slocomb High School.
Silverio was arrested by police Thursday morning during a traffic stop on Geneva County Road 30.
Silverio was being held in the Geneva County Jail on a $105,000 bond. But White said federal immigration agents had a hold on Silverio.
Smith said Silverio had lived in the Slocomb area on an expired work visa for at least a year.
If convicted Silverio faces 10 to 99 years or life in prison for the class A felony of first-degree rape and two to 20 years in prison for each of the class B felony charges of sex abuse of a child under the age of 12.
