This case is still the number 1 cold case in the city even after 38 yrs. This happened 2 blocks from where I live now.I didnt live here at the time and I only remember the case b/c my step dad worked at Fords.Fords is on the same street as this happened and they actually sent the workers off the line to search for this missing little girl.Unfortunately it was a gruesome end. This case will never be closed until it is brought to a satifactory conclusion
These words are true for every unsolved homocide. But they were never more true then when they were spoken by Chief Preston about the murder of 6 yr old Ljubica Topic. This case has haunted former and current members of Windsor Police Dept for more the 38 yrs.Itwas almost dusk May 14 1971 when Ljubica was on Drouillard Road with her 8 yr old brother. They were approached by a young man who offered them money saying he had a job for Ljubica. Her brother was given .10 cents to go away. The man was last seen walking down the street with the little girl. This would be the last time she was seen alive. When her brother got home he told his mother what had happened and a immeadiate massive search began. The search ended about 11:30 pm when her body was found about 6 blocks away in a back yard off the alley. This beautiful innocent girl had been sexually assaulted and viciously beaten.A composite drawing was done and police were busy for weeks tracking down information. In all $11,000 in rewards were offered. Some of this money $2,000.00 came from the Secret Witness Fund of the Detroit News. This was the first time money from this fund was offered for a crime committed in Canada .Over the next 28 yrs tips periodically were called in but no one was arrested. With the advent of DNA profiling this case is once again being investigated, http://www.police.windsor.on.ca/History/historical%20booklet%20final%20draft.pdf (this can be found on page 47 of the police documents at the link) Police Looking For Break In Windsor's Oldest Unsolved Murder

The brutal sexual assault and murder of six-year-old Ljubica Topic three decades ago was among 13 cold murder cases the Windsor police major crimes unit still had on the books this year.
“They remain open cases,” said Staff Sgt. Norm Burkoski, who runs the eight-officer unit. “Of course, the more time that goes on, the more peoples’ memories fade. So it’s important to keep them in the public realm so anyone with information can come forward. Generally, that’s what will regenerate the investigation into these cold cases.” http://www.unsolvedcanada.ca/index.php?PHPSESSID=63e5759d504b27ebf1ce8fd3152816 3c&topic=2724.0
