Michael Parrish shot and killed his girlfriend and 2-year old son

Pennsylvania State Police are searching for a man they say killed a Monroe County woman and her child in their Effort apartment.

Police said Michael John Parrish, 23, of 2037 Route 115, Chestnuthill Township killed Victoria Marie Adams, 21, and Sidney Michael Parrish, 2, of the same address.

Michael Parrish is still at large and believed to be carrying firearms, police said. Police said Adams was Parrish's girlfriend and the boy was their son.

Around 11 p.m. Monday, state police responded to Parrish's residence after gunfire was reported. Troopers found the woman and child dead in the apartment, state police said.

Parrish has been charged with criminal homicide and related offenses, police said.

This morning police had cordoned off the Effort house on Route 115 just north of Gilbert Road and about six cruisers were at the scene.

Next-door neighbor Chris Victor, 37, said he heard a commotion shortly before 11 last night, including some yelling and banging.

He went to his window to look at his neighbor's house and saw flashes and heard what he thought were gunshots.

Victor called police and then saw a man run out of the house and heard a car squeal and speed away. Then Victor said he saw lights in the house going on and off and heard the sounds of people moving about. He said he then heard another "bang" that he is not sure was a gunshot.

Police then arrived and about four hours later questioned Victor about what he witnessed.

Jeff Fisher, 56, lives across the street from the house.

"I didn't even know anyone was in the place," Fisher said. "It's a big thing for downtown Effort."

The couple had been together for three years, since about the time their child was conceived according to reports. Sidney Michael Parrish spent the first year of his short life in the hospital with a heart condition. He had received a heart transplant just eight months ago.

Poor baby Sidney got a second chance at life only to have it stolen from him!!

Former Monroe prison guard withdraws plea in death-penalty case


Fourteen months ago, a former Monroe County Prison guard covered in Nazi tattoos calmly described how he gunned down his girlfriend and 20-month-old sickly son in July 2009 during a jealous rage.

Michael J. Parrish, 25, told Monroe County President Judge Ronald E. Vican he was furious that his 21-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Adams, had returned to their Chestnuthill Township home late with smeared lipstick and wearing different clothes from what she'd left in.

But Parrish also said enough time had passed between her return and the firing of the first bullet to make the killings of Adams and their child, Sidney, premeditated.

Parrish had asked to be put to death, and Vican was set Monday to either grant the wish or order a life sentence. But Parrish surprised the courtroom and drove Adams' family to tears once again by withdrawing his guilty pleas to two counts of first-degree murder and requesting a trial

He said that after studying the law over the past year, he now believes he can beat the murder charges.

"I realize unequivocally that I'm not guilty of first-degree murder," said Parrish, sporting a shaved head and a bushy beard.

Former prison guard charged with killing girlfriend and son is looking for mercy

Two years ago, a former Monroe County prison guard covered in Nazi tattoos admitted to the "premeditated" slayings of his girlfriend and child — a heart transplant recipient — and asked to be put to death.

Michael Parrish later withdrew his plea and showed up to court Monday with a new look supporting his new ideals and with a fresh plea for jurors: Please don't put me to death.

Parrish still admits he gunned down his 21-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Adams, and their 20-month-old son, Sidney, in a jealous rage on July 6, 2009, in their Chestnuthill Township home.

But his attorney, public defender Wieslaw Niemoczynski, told a Monroe County jury during opening statements that Parrish was under tremendous pressure and despair at the time of the shootings and he's hoping for a conviction less severe than first-degree murder, which would result in either a death sentence or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Niemoczynski said Parrish, who is "fundamentally insecure," became agitated the night of the killings when Adams, who had gone to a casino with her mother, failed to return to their Effort home at 6 p.m. to give Sidney his medicine.

Parrish called Adams repeatedly. She was out enjoying drinks with her brother, cousin and others at a house party, according to authorities. Parrish says she returned home around 10:30 p.m. with her brother, cousin and another man and looked disheveled, wearing different clothes than the ones she left in.

"What does it mean if the light of your life comes home with messy hair, lipstick smeared, in the presence of three men?" Niemoczynski asked the jury. "What is your breaking point?"

In a hallway outside the courtroom after opening statements, Niemoczynski said he'll wait until all the testimony is concluded before deciding which charge he'll be asking the jury to convict Parrish of. If Parrish were to be found guilty of third-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter, he would eventually be eligible for parole.

Monroe County First Assistant District Attorney Michael Mancuso told the jury a first-degree murder conviction is warranted. He noted that all 12 shots Parrish fired at his girlfriend and son with his .357-caliber pistol struck the two. He noted Parrish used hollow-point bullets, which are designed to widen as they strike someone to maximize damage to organs.

"Specific intent to kill can be formed quickly," Mancuso told the jury.

Parrish, who says he has dropped his white supremacy ideals and has converted to Islam, showed up in court Monday with a bushy brown beard and white Islamic headpiece.

In April 2010, Parrish told then-President Judge Ronald E. Vican he "absolutely committed murder in the first degree and it was premeditated."

He withdrew the plea in September and requested a trial.

Sunday would have been Victoria Adams' 24th birthday. The family will celebrate not only her memory, but also that a jury Friday convicted the man charged with fatally shooting her and their 19-month-old son, Sidney.

Michael Parrish, 26, maintained the stoic visage he has throughout his trial, as the jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the deaths of girlfriend Victoria and son Sidney in their home in the Monroe County community of Effort, Pa.

In his closing argument to the jury, First Assistant District Attorney Michael Mancuso said what may or may not have happened after Parrish fled the scene has no bearing on the fact that he committed the murders. "He executed his family because his feelings were hurt?" Mancuso asked the jury in an incredulous voice. "He is a jealous, controlling, abusive, murderous thug."

One need only look at the victims, one an innocent, 24-pound child, and how they were shot multiple times, to see this was premeditated and not heat-of-the-moment, Mancuso said.

"If he had truly acted in the heat of the moment and was truly remorseful afterward, why didn't he immediately turn himself in to the police?" Mancuso asked. "Why did he instead have a friend help him head out of state and plan to ensure the police couldn't track him?"
