(UK) The news that nine-year-old Shannon Matthews had been found alive on Friday, hidden by her alleged abductor in the base of a divan bed, provoked astonishment, then jubilation. Television presenters on rolling news channels scrabbled frantically for details of the rescue. Relatives, friends, and Dewsbury locals expressed their unconfined joy: by evening, the impromptu street parties and children's discos were in full swing.
All that is understandable: for a child such as Shannon to be found alive after being missing for 24 days is almost unheard of. The one story more powerful than that of a lost child is that of a child found when hope had almost gone. Therein lay all the elements of a fairy tale satisfactorily resolved. But one little word in the police statement hinted at a different story: the circumstances of her disappearance, it said, were "complicated".
advertisement
That is, perhaps, the word that has defined Shannon's life so far. She is one of Karen Matthews's seven children, by five different fathers. The shifting male presences in her life must have taken a bit of adjusting to. The current stepfather is Craig Meehan, a 22-year-old fishmonger, whom relatives alleged had been violent towards Shannon and her siblings - a charge Mr Meehan has vigorously denied.
The man who allegedly abducted Shannon is Mr Meehan's 39-year-old uncle, whose own children were taken into care some years ago. After her rescue, Shannon was reunited with her mother, but she has been made the subject of an emergency police-protection order.

It seems this kidnapping was only a hoax by the victim's mother, Karen Matthews, and family to make some money. bah...

Shannon Matthews' mother 'may have copied TV kidnap plot'
The mother of Shannon Matthews has been accused of knowing her daughter's whereabouts from the start of the £5 million search for her, sources have disclosed.
Karen Matthews, 32, was being questioned by detectives on Monday night on suspicion of perverting the course of justice after allegedly breaking down in tears in front of a police family liaison officer.
The mother of Shannon Matthews, Karen, has been arrested in connection to her disappearance.
Karen Matthews, Shannon's mother, has been arrested
The Daily Telegraph understands that officers are examining alleged similarities between Shannon's disappearance and a storyline from the Channel 4 drama series Shameless shown in the month before the nine-year-old vanished.
In it, the teenage daughter of Frank Gallagher, the head of a dysfunctional family, staged the fake kidnap of his youngest son, Liam, in an attempt to obtain a £500,000 ransom. All along, Liam was hidden a few doors away with a friend of his sister.
The episode attracted 2.5 million viewers when it was shown on Jan 22.
Shannon failed to return from school after her a swimming lesson on Feb 19, prompting Britain's biggest ever search for a missing person, involving hundreds of police officers and members of the public.
It has emerged that police are examining allegations that people claiming to be connected to Shannon's family asked for donations from the fund set up to find Madeleine McCann, the four-year-old who vanished from a Portuguese holiday apartment last May. A spokesman for her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, said they had received "a number of approaches" for aid from the Find Madeleine Fund from purported representatives of the Matthews family.

THE mother of kidnap girl Shannon Matthews has allegedly told police: “I knew where she was, right from day one.”
Karen Matthews is said to have made her confession in a police car with a family liaison officer and two friends.
They sat in stunned silence as Matthews, 32, allegedly admitted knowing where her nine-year-old daughter had been kept for 24 days, while police spent £5million mounting Britain’s biggest ever missing person investigation.
She was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and read her rights while the police car stood at a red traffic light at 7pm on Friday.
Last night police were investigating the possibility that the mother-of-seven concocted the scam after watching an episode of Channel 4 comedy, Shameless.
In the show – screened on January 22, less than a month before Shannon went missing – a girl stages the fake kidnap of her brother to extort £500,000 in lottery winnings from her father.
Claims that members of Shannon’s family made several approaches to the parents of Madeleine McCann urging them to make a financial donation, are also being investigated.
After a police operation involving more than 600 officers, Shannon was discovered hidden under a divan bed at the flat of Mick Donovan, 39, an unemployed computer programmer and the uncle of Karen’s boy-friend, Craig Meehan.
Donovan has been charged with kidnapping and imprisoning Shannon against her will. He was rushed to hospital at the weekend after slitting his wrists while on remand at Leeds Prison.
Police are continuing to question Matthews at Wood Street Police Station in Wakefield, West Yorks, after her alleged confession to family liaison officer, Det Con Christine Freeman.
Matthews, who has been living at a police safe house, had been taken to meet some close friends by Det Con Freeman. Sources said that as they drove, one of the friends asked Matthews about reports that she had been having an affair with Donovan.
She denied it but was then challenged over a number of supposed inconsistencies in her story. As tempers rose inside the car, Matthews is said to have admitted planning to dump 22-year-old fishmonger Craig Meehan before she started crying and shaking.
A source said: “She said she had known where Shannon was from day one. It seems everything got out of control and she did not know how to stop it.
“She wanted to leave Craig Meehan and Mick Donovan had offered her a place to stay. They had talked at the funeral of Craig’s father, who died in November.”
Matthews then insisted she had not asked Donovan to take Shannon on February 19.
The source added: “It seems he was acting alone in that respect. What is clear is that Karen, soon after Shannon went missing, knew where her daughter was. She was too ashamed to tell the truth.”
During her daughter’s disappearance, Matthews made a number of tearful appeals for her daughter’s safe return.
Hundreds of people on the sprawling Dewsbury Moor estate offered to help in the search. It was Matthews who alerted the police when Shannon failed to return home three hours after a school swimming trip.
In the 999 call, she told the operator she had looked “everywhere I can think of”.
A spokesman for the McCanns confirmed they had received approaches from “people purporting to be members of Shannon’s family” for donations from the Find Madeleine Fund, but said it had been decided not to get involved.
Farrah Johnson, who played a key role in the local campaign to find Shannon, said on being told of the allegations: “It is disgusting and I am sick with anger.
“We all neglected our own children for weeks to help look for Shannon and now this has happened. It is unforgivable.”
Craig Meehan was charged with allegedly having 130 child porn pictures on his computer. None are of Shannon and he has not been charged in connection with Shannon’s kidnap.
His mother, Alice Meehan, 49, was arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice on Friday. Amanda Hyett, 25, of Moorside Road, Dewsbury, has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both have been bailed. Donovan is due to stand trial in November.

"LONDON (AP) -- A mother who tearfully appealed for her missing daughter's return was found guilty Thursday of staging her disappearance in a kidnapping that prosecutors said was committed to claim a reward.
Karen Matthews, Shannon's mother, has been found guilty of kidnapping her own daughter.
Karen Matthews, Shannon's mother, has been found guilty of kidnapping her own daughter.
A jury at Leeds Crown Court took six hours to find Karen Matthews, 33, guilty of kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. Michael Donovan, the uncle of Matthews' former domestic partner, was convicted of the same offenses. Sentencing was deferred but a judge said both faced substantial jail terms.
The nearly month-long search for 9-year-old Shannon Matthews transfixed Britain, and her mother's appeals appeared on front pages across the country.
Matthews reported Shannon missing on Feb. 19 from their home in the Yorkshire town of Dewsbury, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of London. Police found the girl on March 14, hidden in a drawer under a bed in Donovan's nearby apartment. Donovan was also found hiding in the drawer.
Prosecutor Julian Goose told jurors that Matthews and Donovan were motivated by greed -- specifically, a £50,000 ($73,000) reward. Video Watch more on the case »
"It was a plan to take Shannon and keep her captive and make a false complaint, wait for the reward money to grow, pretend to find her and then claim the money. That was the plan between them," he told the jury.
The jury was told that Shannon was drugged and kept at Donovan's home for the 24 days she was missing. Both Donovan and Matthews denied the charges against them, with the child's mother blaming Donovan and his family for Shannon's abduction. Donovan in turn blamed Matthews.
More than 300 police officers were involved in the search for Shannon, and the investigation cost the West Yorkshire Police more than £3.2 million ($4.7 million).

"The one person that Shannon should have been able to rely on more than any other person is her own mother," said Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan, who headed the force's investigation.
"Shannon has been totally betrayed by her own mother. Karen's interest and motivation throughout this has not been for Shannon or anybody else, it's been for her and getting her hands on £50,000."

You know for awhile there I thought that's what casey anthony was doing and would produce the child, but sadly that's not the case.
I wonder how much the Anthony case is costing Orlando, geeze this case was only advertised for 24 days and cost 4 mil.
They need to throw their asses in prison and make them pay all that money back by doing community service, such as picking up trash along the roadways....for years.
How in the hell can two people fit in a fucking drawer is my question?
Now this child will be in foster care, Hopefully she gets a good family that will PROTECT her and love her.

guardian.co.uk, Friday 23 January 2009 The mother of Shannon Matthews was today sentenced to eight years' jail for kidnapping her own daughter in a plot to claim the anticipated reward.
Karen Matthews, 33, and her accomplice, Michael Donovan, 40, were found guilty last month of drugging and imprisoning the nine-year-old schoolgirl for 24 days. Donovan was also sentenced to eight years.
Each was given concurrent sentences of six years and three years for kidnapping and false imprisonment as well as an additional two-year sentence, to be served consecutively, for perverting the course of justice.
The judge, Mr Justice McCombe, told the pair: "The offences that you committed were truly despicable. It is impossible to conceive how you could have found it in you to put this young girl through the ordeal that you inflicted upon her.

Kirklees social services could not have anticipated the abduction of schoolgirl Shannon Matthews, nor her mother's involvement in the abduction, a serious case review has concluded.
A serious case review into the case of Shannon Matthews, the 11-year-old schoolgirl who disappeared from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, in February 2008, has found that social services could not have anticipated her abduction.
Shannon Matthews's mother, Karen, was subsequently jailed for eight years after being convicted of kidnapping her daughter.
The review states: "The Serious Case Review concluded that the historical and current knowledge available to professionals involved with this family could not have led them to anticipate the third child's abduction from her home or her mother's involvement in this.
"The only way to have avoided her abduction was through her prior removal from home under a Care Order and there is no evidence to suggest that this was warranted on the basis of professional knowledge about this case."
The inquiry by Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board found there was "little leeway" for social services and other agencies to intervene before Shannon, then aged nine, was abducted from her home.
[...]
Government guidelines state that serious case reviews should be completed within four months, unless there is a pressing reason, such as a criminal trial.
In this case the inquiry did not start until after the court case had finished.
Previously secret reports into abuse cases, such as those on Baby P and the Edlington boys, will also be published to help restore public confidence in the system.

She may be out of jail, but Karen Matthews now faces life as a prisoner to fear, looking over her shoulder waiting for the reprisals.
The 36-year-old knows she may be subjected to revenge attacks by people furious that she kidnapped her own daughter Shannon in a cynical bid to pocket a £50,000 reward.
And after she was smuggled out of prison yesterday, half way through her eight-year sentence, to start a new life by the seaside, probation chiefs told of the *stringent measures needed to protect her on the outside.
They even include banning her from seeing friend Julie Bushby, the only person to visit her in jail.
Assistant general secretary of probation union Napo Harry Fletcher said: “Because of her notoriety, measures will be taken to protect her from threats.”
He also said she will be under strict *conditions that mean she can never go back to the estate in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, where she lived at the time Shannon, then aged nine, was snatched.
The Probation Service wrote to Julie warning her pal was in danger, such is the anger over the kidnap.
The letter read: “Karen will be expected to abide by a number of very strict conditions on her release.
"Not because we are punishing her, but because of the public who consider her a legitimate target for their own anger.
“You will appreciate the need to ensure we do our level best to keep Karen safe.”
Matthews’ freedom wish list included buying a Big Mac, living in Blackpool and getting a slot on Jeremy Kyle.
However, she has chosen to settle in a town on the east coast, which the Mirror is not revealing.
[...]
She left with a new hairstyle and false *identity. The mum-of-seven has changed her surname.
News of her freedom did not go down well in *Dewsbury Moor.
[...]
The cruel pair both got eight years. Donovan was released on licence on March 16.
The Mirror revealed last month Matthews insisted “others” were involved in the plot but claimed her life would be in danger if she spoke out.
She said she had become so scared of revenge attacks on the outside she even refused a jail trip to the shops.
[...]
If she breaches any of the rules she faces going back to jail to finish her sentence.
Julie said yesterday: “I know there is a lot of anger from the public and I understand that. I was conned too.
"But I genuinely believe others were involved and it is important to find out who.
“She had a really tough time inside, :bawling: she was beaten up :whoo: and her brother died.” The Ministry of Justice would not comment.

It is a miracle that Shannon is alive and well today. Probably the best thing that ever happened to her was this fake abduction, in the long run. If she'd stayed with her mom she would have probably been sexually abused, raped even, by mom's boy toy, who went down for child porn later.
As for mommy dearest here, there is a small measure of comfort in knowing that this bitch will have the same quiet, happy life (insert sarcasm here) that the murderers of Jamie Bulger have enjoyed. They have been in and out of trouble, jail, you name it. Their secret whereabouts didn't stay secret for very long, and they will probably spend the rest of their lives paying for killing a baby, which is as it should be.
This woman deserves whatever she gets in the way of revenge or retribution.

The Jeremy Kyle show is a daytime programme where all the degenerate dregs of society go to air their filthy laundry. Paternity tests (where any one of a number of men could be the babydaddy), lie detector tests, drug tests. Families who are a fussin' an a feudin' go on to 'sort things out'. It's car-crash viewing. It doesn't surpise me that someone like Karen Matthews want's to go on there.
She would probably pass the lie detector test - she's probably convinced herself she is telling the truth. After the performance she put on when Shannon 'disappeared', she is obviously a compulsive liar.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2126765/Karen-Matthews-Vigilantes-vow-attack-Britains-worst-mother.html
Vigilantes are vowing to hunt down Karen Matthews in an online hate campaign after she was released from prison this week.
Websites have been bombarded with threats made against the 36-year-old who was nicknamed 'Britain's worst mother' after she hatched a plot to abduct her nine-year-old daughter Shannon in an attempt to claim £50,000.
Police are monitoring threats of revenge being made on websites including Twitter and Facebook against Matthews, who is believed to have gone a diet to change her appearance.
[...]
Matthews is now living anonymously in a bail hostel but officers are worried she will be recognised soon and her address will be made public leaving her at risk to attacks from vigilantes.
She has lost weight and been given a full makeover including a new hairstyle to prevent her being recognised in the street.
A prison source told the Sunday Express: 'She has lost weight, however, and has been given a new haircut so she looks different to the way she did when she was jailed four years ago.'
Unlike Maxine Carr, who was jailed after the Soham murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, she has not been given a new identity including a new National Insurance number and passport.
Such a move would have cost the taxpayer £250,000 and required Matthews to keep her real identity a secret.
It is not known if Matthews requested a new identity. But officials were so concerned that she would jeopardise it and her safety by failing to keep it a secret that they ruled it out.
A source told The People: 'If Karen Matthews' whereabouts are revealed in the next few weeks and the danger to her is deemed to be high, she'll be moved to another location.'
Matthews, whose children are now in care, will remain on licence for the rest of her sentence.
One tweeter calling himself 7nightstorock wrote: 'I will happily shoot her in the head for a packet of tooty fruities.'
I have my doubts as to how serious these 'death threats' really are. But wouldn't it be cool if someone iced her on the Jeremy Kyle show! His ratings would go through the roof!

Interesting how a handful of these British cases come out like this, perps getting out of prison and needing new identities because the public is still so outraged. Yet, it's in the news. I can't think of any -- maybe some of you can -- where an American prisoner got this kind of treatment . . . and we heard about it. Maybe it happens all the time. Anyone know?

Well in America we have the Federal Witness Protection Program, some of them are nice people who are caught in a really, really bad situation and need to be protected, but I'm guessing a fair amount of them are people like Shannon's "mother". Every knows about the program but it's never advertised when someone goes into it and gets their names, appearances changed and are relocated, in fact what very little I know about it is that if you can't stay away from your old haunts or can't keep your location secret or keep your mouth shut about who you are, then you are "expelled" from the program.

Yeah, WITSEC protects criminals who agree to testify against bigger criminals. They're supposedly being protected from criminal organizations that will see them dead if they are found, not the angry general public.
I believe, if felons emerging from prison were to be given this type of protection, it would not be under WITSEC's mantle, but under some other agency, like the DOC or DOJ, but if they're doing it, it's apparently been successfully kept under the radar of the news media.

Tho there could be something no one knows about, that's always a possibility when you're talking about our Federal Government. The U.S. is so much bigger in terms of area that's it's really alot easier to get lost here than it would be in England. But if you can't keep your mouth shut and live under the radar to protect your own ass from getting killed by the general public, nothing's gonna help you. @Bohring (http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/member.php?u=3741), oh me, too. For a while I was totally obsessed with the Jamie Bulger story b/c it seemed to me that, in all the process of trying to make sure that these "children" were treated properly and fairly in the legal system, somehow it felt like the fact that that adorable little baby boy was LURED to his death of methodical torture that was not quick was forgotten. They dragged it out and made it last until they got bored with the whole thing and then, he became an object to get rid of. Oh, let's just leave him on the tracks. The train will take care of him.
I may be wrong, but, in my opinion, when they stepped off into their sadistic game of slowly murdering a baby, they ceased to deserve any real consideration as human beings, not to mention as children. There was and is a critical element of humanity missing in someone who can do something so horrible and just walk away, going home to dinner. Whatever harassment and problems they've had with being found out and so forth..... I figure they earned it all as a part of the punishment that society SHOULD have meted out to them. Instead, as I said before, everyone was so caught up in coddling absolute monsters (age is not a factor to be considered) that Jamie Bulger once again became something that someone wanted to shove to the side and get out of the way. I don't care how young those guys were/are, whatever. They should be in some kind of incarceration for most of their lives. I honestly believe that, once they've stepped beyond a certain point (once again, age is not to be considered in this case), rehabilitation isn't a possibility and they should be treated as the animals they are.
And you know? I don't think we would be the only ones who have wished Jamie Bulger's killers dead. Slow torture first, though. Very slow.

princessgrandma, I know. I get so torn over the whole, but they're just children thing. They had tried to steal another baby before they found Jamie. They threw paint in his face and shoved batteries in his anus. They said they only kept beating him because he kept getting up. Fuck those kids. Hell, my three year old knows not to hit babies, other kids and animals. He knows that it hurts them. Those kids were/are monsters.
I say turn them over to the public. I know we're not the only ones that want justice for Jamie. One psychologist called what happened once the beating began was "a frenzy." I have a feeling the same would happen with a mob and those assholes.
God, man, I didn't even used to believe in the death penalty. Maybe Motherhood has made ME a monster.

Rest assured, @Bohring (http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/member.php?u=3741), motherhood has not made either of us monsters, unless being loving and protective are monstrous concepts. As for that, ask me how much I care if anyone actually thinks they are monstrous concepts. (try nada, zip, zilch) lol.
You are not a monster. You are a mom. Two m-words, completely different ends of the spectrum.
As for the Jamie Bulger murder, I think a part of what made it so obsessive for me was that it was so hard to wrap my mind around the whole thing in the first place, but then when I read stuff like you said above (they kept beating him b/c he kept getting up, like the beating was his fault for not just falling dead in the first minutes of this nightmare, and the "frenzy" thing. How the hell do kids that young get so worked up, they go into an actual frenzy? Two little kids, and we're talking majorly whacked, FFS.
I don't think I'd ever be able to understand it, but then, to understand it, I'd have to be able to know the mindset of these whackjobs, and that's something I don't EVER care to do.
