Liverpool - Four women were being held by police on suspicion of murder last night after the "vicious and brutal" stabbing of a female cyclist.
The 26-year-old victim was attacked in Liverpool after getting into an argument with the occupants of a car, Merseyside police said.
Witnesses said the cyclist attempted to ride away from the row but was chased down.
Two women got out and assaulted and stabbed her repeatedly, before getting back in the car – thought to have been driven by a man – and making off.
The cyclist, who has not yet been named but was said to have worn tattoos of the words Atalia and Demi-Lee, died at the scene.
The killing happened at 8.30pm on Friday in Woodville Terrace in the Anfield area of the city.
Police had yesterday sealed off the scene while specialists carried out forensic tests. The murder weapon has not yet been recovered.
Following house-to-house enquiries, detectives executed three warrants on addresses in the Anfield area, arresting two women, aged 25 and 48.
They later held two more women aged 19 and 25, bringing the total to four.
Detective Chief Inspector Richie Davies, of Merseyside Police, described the stabbing as "vicious and brutal".
He said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this attack, or who has any information which could help us with our inquiries, to contact the police as soon as possible."
Officers at first had trouble identifying the victim but last night believed they knew who she was.
They were delaying releasing her name until all next-of-kin had been informed.
She was described as 5ft 6in, with dark brown hair in a single plait.
The incident is not thought to be traffic-related and police believe the cyclist knew her attackers.
In an attempt to reassure the community, officers had last night stepped up high visibility patrols in the area.
One local claimed children took pictures of the victim in a bloody state on their mobiles.
Witnesses are asked to call Merseyside police on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Detectives particularly want to speak to anyone who saw a small, dark car in the area at the time.
