As some may have noticed, I love Doom\Sludge metal with a side of Stoner Rock. But when it comes to Southern Doom, nothing beats the boys from my state of North Carolina, the filthy outcasts, Weedeater (http://www.weedeatertheband.com).
A three peice sludge/doom bad hailing from Wilmington, these guys have some of the most evil sounding vocals backed by some syrupy riffs and a punching bass it could force your bowels to loosen involuntarily, these guys are untouchable when it comes to Southern doom. Their plodding music hits like fists of anvil and while the southern vibe is there, it is not a predominant one.
It was just recently announced in April (http://blog.southernlord.com/?p=76) that the band was signed to the awesome Southern Lord Records (http://www.southernlord.com/), and their new album called Good Speed and God Luck has been recorded and will be released sometime this summer. Until then, check out their 2001 debut album, And Justice for Y'all or their 2002 followup, Sixteen Tons, produced by legendary Billy Anderson.
They are touring at the moment, so you can also try to catch a show while you can as the stories about these guys make it hard to believe they are still alive.
