http://i42.tinypic.com/95vk8l.jpgA Fort Collins mom is being charged with sexually assaulting a minor who police allege in an arrest affidavit she met at social gatherings for people who dress up like animals and call themselves “furries.”

Police say 45-year-old Richael Michels had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy she met in March at a furry gathering.
[...]

The affidavit indicates Michels was friends with the boy’s mother, who Michels told police trusted her as a role model for the boy.

A person who helped police in their investigation, whose name is redacted from the affidavit, told police Michels told him the relationship with the boy was ironic because the his mom trusted her as a men-tor and “the whole time she was having sex with him.”

Police began investigating Michels after receiving a tip from the Department of Human Services referencing an allegation of sexual abuse of a child.

According to the affidavit, the information came from Michels’ husband, who told police his wife spends a “significant” amount of time online chatting with people he didn’t know. Michels’ daughter also told him Michels was chatting online with a young male, which the husband told police.

The husband also told police Michels had recently become involved with the furry lifestyle.

To build their case, police used an individual – whose identity and relationship to Michels is not clear because the document is heavily redacted – to send text and online messages to Michels, who had the nickname “Kitteh.”

In a series of messages through MSN Live Messenger there were conversations exchanged about Michels having sex with the boy, the affidavit alleges.http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20090701/UPDATES01/90701035?FORM=ZZNR2

Hey, if you're a furry, fine... just don't drag kids into it.
But I gotta wonder how the costume looked if he wanted to mess with THAT. Had to look better with the costume on.

Detectives built their case against Michels by using an individual she knew, but whose identity was redacted from the affidavit. In a series of text messages and messages through MSN Live Messenger, the individual told Michels she could no longer attend the furry meetings.

"This wasn't any sort of punishment from him, it’s because you've been having sex with him that we can't have that going on at the furmeet," one of the messages said. "If you were to promise to stop having sex with him or at least not tell me about it, then things could change. I just don't want to get in trouble, which could get us involved."

Detectives sent messages to Michels through the individual to get her to admit to the relationship. According to the affidavit, "During the messaging between [the individual] and Michels, there were conversations exchanged about her having sex" with the teen, including on a few occasions, in her car.

When detectives confronted the teen about the relationship, he said Michels and him "engaged in sexual contact on multiple occasions, but he couldn't remember the details," the affidavit said.http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/19920456/detail.html

The kid probably can't remember because he was busy trying to keep his animal costume on... or at least her headpiece on her.

How do you pronounce the name "Richael"? Does it rhyme with Michael?

Why did the article put a hyphen in mentor?

And finally,

WTF was a 16 year old doing at a furry gathering any goddamn way? Moms, would you allow your teenagers to attend these events?

Oh, and while I'm all for folks expressing themselves, furries are some freaks. Freaks with every right to be furry freaks with other consenting adult furry freaks, but freaks nonetheless. Live your bliss your crazy fur bearing critters, just leave kids and other non-participatory folks out of your weirdfest.

To me, it's just a step or two too far beyond cosplay. I love the creativity and whimsy of cosplay, but LARPing anthroanimal porn in weird funfur mascot costumes is right there with adult babies and piss play in my book. Not criminal, but kind of icky and not to my taste. If it's your thing, go you. I've got no issue with kink.

oh, cosplay is generally harmless.

Folks dress up as fantasy characters, often from anime or video games and enter competitions. Some folks apply the term cosplay to any sort of "costumed play" (hence, cos-play), so folks at Star Trek events who wear uniforms are participating in cosplay.

Sometimes it gets out of hand, generally when folks think they are waaay hotter than they truly are, usually geek girls. They pick a character showing too much flesh for a piece of fiction and proceed to expose more. A good example are all the slave Leias at Star Wars conventions. Not everyone can or should try to carry off a metal bra and slit skirt.

At it's best, though cosplay can produce some pretty amazing stuff that shows you the fruits of real creativity and artistry. The winning entry at last year's Gen Con was a giant winged dragon operated by two people. Pretty cool.
