A 51-year-old Snelling woman was arrested on suspicion of spousal abuse after Merced County sheriff's deputies said she knocked over the 74-year-old man she was living with, breaking his hip. She continued to kick and hit him as he struggled in an incident that began with an argument outside a store over cigarettes, according to a news release from the Merced County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Deborah French responded to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock just after 3 a.m. Monday after authorities received a report of abuse.

According to the 74-year-old man, he had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, Rayma Suenram, outside the store. The argument continued at their home in the 7000 block of Merced Falls Road where, about 9 p.m., Suenram pushed him to the ground after he told her that he wanted her out of the house, deputy Tom MacKenzie said. The man broke his hip. Suenram began hitting and kicking the man, who tried to defend himself with his hands, MacKenzie said. Suenram left the house, and it took the man about two hours to move the two feet to reach the telephone, where he called his son, who lives next door. His son called for an ambulance, which took his father to Emanuel.

Deputy Samuel Becerra returned to the home about 7 a.m. and found a broken window and Suenram's vehicle.

After ordering Suenram out of the home, she was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of spousal abuse and assault with great bodily injury and remains in custody on $80,000 bail, according to the news release.
