FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- What was already a gruesome killing turned even more disturbing Monday as the autopsy results were made available.
: Police Admit Role In Death Of Pregnant Woman
Police say they got to 26-year-old Jill Ulmer's Fayetteville apartment Friday night as the suspect was stabbing her.

Officers said they were trying to stop 41-year-old Ricky Anderson from killing his ex-girlfriend when they opened fire into the apartment.
Monday, the Fayetteville Police Department said one of those gunshots fired by an officer actually hit Ulmer and is listed as her cause of death, along with multiple stab wounds.

Police also confirmed that Ulmer was pregnant.

Some are running out of words to describe the situation.

"It's absolutely horrible. Fayetteville is a small town, and it's a friendly town, and I feel safe. I just feel bad for her family, and my prayers go out to her," said neighbor Anne Kearney.

Neighbors still dealing with Friday night's killing got even more troubling news Monday when they learned a shot fired by police officers hit Ulmer while she was being stabbed.

"That's awful, but I don't think they had another choice," Kearney said.

Neighbors said police did everything they could to stop what was happening.

New information also surfaced about the suspect.

"We've had a few run-ins with him. He has been the subject of some investigations and some arrests," said Fayetteville police Sgt. Bill Phelan.

Police said Anderson is a suspect in an alleged rape earlier this month. He also violated a protective order that Ulmer had against him and had previously broken into her apartment.

Domestic violence experts said Ulmer's killing is an eye-opener.

"It's kind of like a wakeup call to all of us in the community to keep our eyes open and be caring about anybody, particularly young pregnant women who might have had a violent person in their lives.," said Judi Selle of the Peace At Home Family Shelter.

In a statement, the fayetteville Police Department said it is saddened by Ulmer's tragic death and that it was unfortunate that the officers' best efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

Anderson has been charged with second degree murder. His arraignment is scheduled for July 27. http://www.4029tv.com/cnn-news/19902903/detail.html

Wow i think everyone is victim in this situation, the woman, the famiy, the police officers that have to wrestle with the fact their shots hit the victim...

We trust police officers to make the right choice in situations like this and they are fully trained but even with all that trust and all that training sadly enough there will always be tragic situations like this.

My heart goes out too all involved here (minus the murdering asshole of course)

I was just reading this story on the news, Tragedy all the way around. This article explains the cops point of view the best. And I posted the pict of the front door and window. The sad part is the cops didn't have a clear shot at him from there angle, they did fire 9 shots total, they all totally missed Ricky, and one hit Jill , but it was a head shot.

The Medical Examiner's Office said she had 25-30 stab wounds and one of them had severed a major artery in her abdomen. That one was a kill strike and she would have bled out in minutes from that one wound, so she would NOT have lived anyways , even if she hadn't been head shot. The way I am going to take it the cop could have saved her suffering a bit. Besides that I just read they cleard the cops of it anyways.

Fayetteville police Chief Greg Tabor today released information regarding the internal investigation into the death of Jill Ulmer. Per police department policy, an internal investigation is completed after a deadly force incident resulting in serious physical injury or death. The internal investigation revealed Corporal Chris Scherrey, a 6-1/2 year veteran of the department, and Officer Ken Willyard, a 4 year veteran of the department, responded to 2182 N. Leverett Avenue, #15, after the police department received a 911 emergency call from Ms. Jill Ulmer.

Ms. Ulmer reported she had obtained an order of protection against a former boyfriend, Ray Anderson, whom she had just seen on the parking lot walking toward her apartment. Ms. Ulmer reported Anderson appeared to have been carrying something. The officers reported that, while approaching the apartment on foot, they both saw and heard the door loudly slam shut followed by screams from within. Each officer attempted to forcibly enter the apartment by way of the front door; however, the door would not give way to their efforts. One officer then kicked through the front window of the apartment.

Each officer reported observing a man matching the description Ms. Ulmer had provided on the floor behind the living room couch. The officer believed the suspect was punching Ms. Ulmer as they heard her screams and saw her arms and legs flailing above the edge of the couch as she attempted to defend herself.

One officer attempted to deploy a conducted energy weapon (Taser) through the window in an attempt to stop the assault on Ms. Ulmer; however, the deployment was not successful. It was at this time the officers realized the suspect had a knife in his hand and he was repeatedly stabbing, rather than striking, Ms. Ulmer. Both officers then drew their service weapons and shot at the man in an attempt to stop the assault.

The officer stated the suspect could be seen "bobbing up and down" as he continued to repeatedly stab Ms. Ulmer. The officers attempted to shoot over the couch at the suspect who was in constant motion. The officers continued to shoot until they observed the suspect roll away from his original position; a total of nine shots were fired. The officers believed the suspect might have been struck. Making full entry into the apartment by way of the window, the officers discovered the suspect sitting on the floor near Ms. Ulmer; a knife was lying nearby as well.

The State Medical Examiner's Office released a preliminary report indicating Ms. Ulmer's cause of death was 25-30 stab wounds found on her body and a gunshot would to the head. A forensic examination of the officer's service weapons will have to be completed in an attempt to determine which weapon fired the bullet striking Ms. Ulmer. It was further revealed one knife wound had severed a major artery in Ms. Ulmer's abdomen that would have caused her death within minutes.

medical examiner's office Monday, show both stab wounds and the gunshot wound as fatal

A police bullet and multiple stab wounds were responsible for the death of Ulmer, 26, according to information released Monday evening by the Fayetteville Police Department

The State Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Monday that Ulmer was pregnant at the time of her death.

Threet said that if a fetus is older than 12 weeks, a second murder charge can be pursued in Arkansas. Younger than 12 weeks, it cannot.

In this case, according to the preliminary autopsy report, the fetus was less than 12 weeks old so, under the law, he cannot charge Anderson for that killing.

(Note: She was eight weeks along.)
