I just watched this one and I liked it. It cost 60,000 bucks to make and they did a great job except for the fire FX! This one had that "28 Days Later" vibe and the semi-documentary, low budget feel really helped it feel more realistic to me. I liked getting to know the building's tenants so that you cared about what happened to them, and cross-cutting to Casey trying to get back home kept things interesting as well. Instead of Zombies(I know they weren't Zombies), This film had rats biting humans and turning them into human/rat mutations. The rat mutation thing was odd, but didn't really bother me ... 7/10

Holy cow! I'm not one to get all excited by an indie horror movie but this movie would have to be the exception.

The people of NYC are under attack by rats. The government has quarantined Manhattan and all hell's broken loose!
Those who've been bitten have mutated into "rat people."

This movie makes you care about the characters which makes it that much harder to see them die.
I really liked this flick and highly recommend it.

Just finished this and it was watchable too! Started out slow...
then turned into Friday the 13th, then morphed into Evil Dead!

Another 7/10

This is a great popcorn eating fun scary movie! 'Nightmare Man' is another classic horror-comedy from Dir. Rolfe Kanefsky starring scream queen Tiffany Shepis. This is essence of Kanefsky horror- great comic lines that come just before the gross kill, the tough sexy Shepis toting guns and crossbows and an awesome traumaqueen performance from the gorgeous Blythe Metz who was pretty darn believable. True to form Kanfesky takes us on a thrilling ride full of twists and turns. It made me jump in my seat and laugh out loud! If you want high art, go to the opera, if you want a fun night with friends eating popcorn in your living room, get Nightmare Man

Borderland was a good movie. So far horrorfest '07 is better than last year. Good cast and a few surprises, 3 buddies head to Mexico and end up gettin' involved with some cult. Kinda like Hostel, definitely worth checking out. 7/10

This movie was kinda like a really good Sci-Fi Channel movie. FX were crappy at times but still a fun movie! Think "Feast" meets "Alien" with a touch of "The Descent" 6/10

Watched this today and this one was a decent rip-off of Wrong Turn!
But I pretty much like anything with mutant hillbillies in it! 7/10

This one was about 8 freinds that go to a funeral and get a map from the one being buried.
The map leads them to an old abandoned medical facility when a ghost within the facility begins attacking,
leaving our group in the dark about what to do or where to go.

Everytime he dies he wakes up as someone eles who is about to die! 7/10

Horrorfest 2007 was much better than last year where I thought only 3 or 4 films were watchable.
All the films this year were pretty watchable with only Unearthed scoring lower because of some of the FX!

Well that's it for this year, Bring on Horrorfest 2008! :D

Christ. I'm never trusting that "check if this thread exists" feature ever again. From now on, I'm going to have to scour the forums first. My only two threads in here are double posts, essentially. Super weak. :p

Borderland

Basic premise: Three young men make an impromptu trip to Mexico to celebrate graduation. All is well and good until they become the apparent prey of a local "blood cult" looking to sacrifice one of them.

All in all, it was a decent film. The production quality was good; the acting was above average for the horror genre; the movie employed a fairly rich cast of characters. I was especially fond of the villain who was an almost regal representation of the "kind killer" dichotomy.

One thing I hated about this film: Either I'm just slow, or there were some holes in the plot. Not enough to ruin it for you, but enough to be annoying.

One thing I loved about this film: Toward the end of the film, one character makes a crazy noise...repeatedly. The film is worth watching for that piece of unintentional comedic glory, alone.

Tooth and Nail

Basic premise: Is it just me, or is Rider Strong an official horror mascot, now? He's featured in both Borderland and this movie. He and a random group of relatively young folk are surviving out of a hospital in a post-apocalyptic America, guided by the wisdom of an older adult named "The Professor", when they are blind-sided by a band of cannibals referred to as "Rovers".

This movie had a lot of interesting elements to it, from the thing that caused the end of humanity, to the strangely democratic power-struggle among the young folk, to members of the cast that made up the Rovers. The film was entertaining - paced quickly enough to keep you engaged and different enough to spark conversation afterward.

One thing I hated about this film: A few things were painfully predictable.

One thing I loved about this film: All the characters were named after cars or auto companies. I got a kick out of that.

6/10

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/18/Deaths_of_ian_stonemp.jpg/200px-Deaths_of_ian_stonemp.jpg

The Deaths of Ian Stone

The basic premise: Strange. Almost like a twisted version of Groundhog Day meets Monsters Inc. In short, this cat, Ian Stone, must endure death after death until he figures out the significance of his life. Each death launches him directly into another life, each one, different.

Considering the potential for convolution this plot presents, they do a good job of making it possible for the audience to follow along. There is a lot of license taken, however, in order to do that. So, in some cases, it seems like the writer probably thought, "If I don't explain this, people will be lost, but if I do, it'll be cheesy". It was still engaging, though.

One thing I hated about this movie: For as many times as dude died, you don't actually get to see as many deaths. Sometimes, it just shows him in the next life already. I wanted to see every death.

One thing I loved about this movie: Some of the deaths weren't really predictable, so the movie left you constantly wondering when dude was going to get caught again.

5/10

http://www.horrorfestonline.com/img/crazyeights.jpg

Crazy Eights

Basic premise: Six adults travel to a building to investigate a time capsule they buried as young friends as the fulfillment of their recently deceased friend's dying wish. In said capsule, they discover the remains of a child, which, combined with nightmares that they all share, spurs them to unravel the mystery behind their connection to this building.

Wooo! Finally, a movie that even registers on my anxiety meter! You'll have to excuse me, as the Horrorfest films were touted to be exceptionally scary and, thus far, this is the only one that got a rise out of me. That being said, the rise was still not substantial. The acting and production quality was standard for less than top tier horror, but was not so awful that it really detracted from the film, in my opinion.

One thing I hated about this movie: They combined real life horror (the circumstance under which they were involved with the building) with two kinds of supernatural horror - the creature after them AND a building that seemed to be alive. It didn't work, for me.

One thing I loved about this movie: You don't know any more going into it than they do, so the discovery of evils really lends itself to tension and suspense.

7/10

Lake Dead

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ee/Mulberry_street_07.jpg/200px-Mulberry_street_07.jpg

Mulberry Street

Basic premise: An infectious virus carried by rats breaks out in Manhattan that, once contracted, turns people into violent zombie-like creatures (think 28 Days Later) with rat features. A number of apartment building tenants fight to survive the night.

Hands down, this is my favorite of the set, thus far. The production quality was gritty, but pulled off quite nicely. The character development was solid; these people strike you as average, real folk. They aren't the retards you commonly encounter in horror flicks, nor are they superhuman. The way they used news footage to illustrate the spread of the disease in the background as you watch these people conduct daily life adds to the "impending doom" feel and builds a bit of tension for when the shit finally hits the fan. And the rat people? Actually pretty damn freaky looking. This is the first movie of the set that I solidly recommend.

One thing I hated about this film: That it wasn't longer.

One thing I loved about this film: They obviously aimed to make everything as realistic as possible, and reached that mark.

7/10

Nightmare Man

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ed/L_f19f902b9f86252cdd3bf285c21c048d.jpg/200px-L_f19f902b9f86252cdd3bf285c21c048d.jpg

Unearthed

Basic premise: A tanker crash strands travelers and townspeople alike this desert town. Shortly thereafter, people and livestock start to die. The hot, female sherrif discovers that a stange animal is behind the killings as she tries to help those around her stay alive.

The focus in this movie seems to be on the dualing plots, rather than character development. There's a fairly wide variety of characters, but you don't get to know any of them particularly well. Instead, the movie juxtaposes the main plot with a side plot revealing the sherrif's personal struggle and tragedy. Also, keep in mind that these are fairly low budget movies, folks, so I didn't judge the pretty fake looking creature too harshly. Don't expect to get any good jumps out of this Alienesque movie. They did make a solid attempt with the gore, though.

One thing I hated about this movie: The character development was a little TOO shallow, for my tastes. They were total strangers, to me, for the most part.

One thing I loved about this movie: Charlie Murphy was in it! AND, as the only black man in the film, he didn't die in the first scene!

4/10
