NEW ORLEANS, June 18 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old Louisiana woman faces criminal charges after her 3-year-old son allegedly ate some crack cocaine, police said.
A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office arrest report alleges Heather Bubrig purchased crack cocaine Friday and began using the drug in a motel room in Marrero, La., while her young son was there, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Wednesday.
Sometime over the weekend, her son found and consumed an unspecified amount of the cocaine, police allege in the report.
The child was found by deputies who came to the motel seeking Bubrig, who was wanted on an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge. Police said the child, who appeared dirty and had an unpleasant odor, was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors found traces of cocaine in his system.
The Times-Picayune said Bubrig was been charged with child desertion, improper supervision of a minor and illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor.

Heather Bubrig, 28, was arrested Monday and booked with child desertion, improper supervision of a minor and illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor. Authorities alleged that her son ingested cocaine while she was using the narcotic at the Siesta Motel over the weekend.
Heather Bubrig: A graduate of Ursuline Academy in New Orleans
She was released from jail after posting bond of $9,500.
According to an incident report, Bubrig left the home she shared with her boyfriend, Guy Dumaine, late Saturday while he was sleeping and took her two children with her. The couple has a 3-year-old son and 4-month-old son. The report says Dumaine reported his vehicle missing Sunday morning, and later in the day received word that Bubrig may have taken the children to the Siesta Motel.
Dumaine said he arrived at the hotel and saw an unidentified man leave the business in his vehicle. He then went into a room where he found Bubrig and the children, the report states. A deputy called to the scene said that he found Dumaine carrying the 3-year-old through the motel parking lot. The child was dirty, disoriented and wearing only a diaper, according to the report. It was unclear from the report where the infant was located when deputies arrived.
The 3-year-old was later taken to Ochsner West Bank hospital, where his urine tested positive for cocaine. He returned home Thursday.
Dumaine late Thursday disputed several items in the incident report. He says the report is wrong when it says that his wife left on Saturday evening. He says his wife left late Friday night or early Saturday morning. He also says that his wife did not have both of his children, only his 3-year old son. Dumaine says that he did not receive information that his wife was at the Siesta Motel, he only went there on a "whim" because he was aware of that narcotics activity occurred there.
Dumaine added that when he encountered officers his son was already inside of his vehicle and he was not carrying him across the parking lot. Deputies had been called to his home twice to handle domestic incidents, but police visits were not a regular occurrence at the residence, Dumaine said.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said he had not seen the report and could not discuss the inconsistencies.
Dumaine said his girlfriend is typically a good mother, but he said she has a problem with crack cocaine. He said that because of Bubrig's arrest he has had to miss work for several days to care for the children and it's putting a strain on his family.
Dumaine added that he has tried to work with Bubrig and her addiction, but said that now that she has endangered their children, it changes the situation.
Bubrig, a graduate of Ursuline Academy in New Orleans, pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a movable in May and was on probation for that offense.
"She's a good woman, " he said. "But she has a terrible freaking addiction."
Neighbors also said there were no signs that Bubrig neglected her children. And, while several neighbors seemed aware of prior narcotics problems, none of them reported seeing drug activity at the home.
Johnny Cappell, who lives next to the family, said police were occasionally called to the home for domestic issues, but the family seemed fairly happy. Dumaine moved into the home, which belonged to his mother, following Hurricane Katrina, Cappell said.
Cappell said his wife baby-sat the two children at times, and the 3-year-old seemed like a happy little boy.
"He's really nice, a smart boy, " Cappell said.
