DERIDDER, La. (AP) - A 24-year-old DeRidder man has been arrested in the beating of an 18-month-old child.

Jeffery P. Denby was arrested Friday by Beauregard Parish Sheriff's deputies and booked with attempted first-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

Denby's arrest came after deputies received a report Thursday night that the 18-month-old child was receiving treatment for severe head trauma and bruising at an area emergency room.

Deputies say detectives learned during their investigation that four children ranging in age from two months to three years were left in Denby's care on Thursday. Deputies say Denby allegedly beat the 18-month-old after tipping over the two-month-old's bassinet.

The child was listed in critical condition at a Lake Charles hospital.

My twins were 20 months when my son was born and it has been a balancing act for sure. I kept my son inside of a superyard (basically a big gate) and a swing for the first 6 weeks unless I was holding him or he was in my room.

One of my twins almost knocked over the seat my 3 month old at the time was in. I kicked..... myself extremely hard for leaving the three of them alone like that. That was dumb. I reminded my toddler that babies are fragile and we have to keep our feet off their chairs and bodies. I then brought the seat my son was in into the kitchen while I finished making them lunch. My little Luke is not even a month older than JT. I cannot imagine the light that has gone out his mom's life.

Holly A. Brewer, age 20, of DeRidder was arrested this morning at her residence by detectives. Brewer is charged with accessory after the fact to second degree cruelty to a juvenile. Brewer's arrest came after an investigation into the death of Brewer's 18 month old child who was brought to a local hospital with severe head trauma.

Brewer had left the child in the custody of Jeffery P. Denby, age 24, of DeRidder who was arrested June 19th, 2009, in connection with the child's death. During the investigation Brewer revealed that she had knowledge of ongoing abuse at the residence.

"Upon further investigation we found she did tell us some lies about what happened, where it occurred," said Beauregard Parish Sheriff Ricky Moses.

Brewer was arrested Monday morning at her DeRidder home. She's now facing a charge of accessory after the fact to second degree cruelty to a juvenile.

These latest developments come nearly a month after Brewer's live-in boyfriend, 24-year-old Jeffery P. Denby was booked into the Beauregard Parish Jail and charged with J.T.'s murder. Sheriff's investigators say Brewer left J.T. and three other small children, including a 3-month-old fathered by Denby, in Denby's care. During that time investigators say Denby beat J.T. after he knocked over the infant's bassinet.

Back in June Brewer recalled finding J.T. unresponsive. "He wouldn't wake up. And I was crying my eyes out saying please baby wake up. Just wake up for mommy. He wouldn't wake up," said Brewer.

J.T. would later die from severe head trauma, but Sheriff Moses says this was not the first time: "The doctors found some signs of previous abuse on the child some older abuse and through further investigation we found out that the abuse had been occurring since early March and the mother was aware of it and failed to report it."

Brewer was booked into the Beauregard Parish Jail on $150,000 bond. Sheriff Moses says they don't expect to make any other arrests at this time. Meanwhile, at last check all of the three other children that were in Denby's care are still in state custody.

I spent the weekend in San Diego...

Took my daughter to Sea World, the beach-and I took nearly 200 pics of my baby, who is 19 months old as of yesterday, enjoying life as a child. She was enamored by waves and big giant fish.

I look at these pictures of this baby-lying there dying and I could not stop myself from crying. I can imagine that the most painful and hardest thing I would ever do in my life-is to sit and wait 3 hours- for my baby to never take another breath. I swear the notion of it right now makes me feel so despared and sick inside. How on earth this woman could sit there and watch her baby die-knowing she could have prevented it-is beyond any and all comprehension. And here this father is, regrardless of his age, sitting next to him, forced to do the same-and never knowing it could have been prevented.

What abuse leaves behind is the battered body, and empty shell of a child promises...of a life stolen. So many cases just like this one, still each is unique, the little person, the once smiling child. At the end all we see is the end result. The death.

J.T. was beaten by raging bastard, but his mother plays an important role in all of it. A mother who chooses her life over her childs is sure to lose the one hope of everlasting love. The saddest thing is before these people they saw J.T's beautiful light, his innocence his wonderment about everything, still, he was beat for simply being a child.

As to the "mother", it sounds cold but something didn't sit right with me, despite her myspace. Call it a gut instinct but someone who can beat a child to death usually doesn't just snap out of the blue or decide one day to just do it. As we've seen in most cases, there has been abuse before, and in many cases, the mom knew it. I was hoping that small voice telling me she knew and did nothing was wrong. Sadly, this didn't turn out to be the case.

Before the court proceedings the media was kicked out by Judge Martha O'neal, but not before she made a statement. After she closed the court room, the witnesses were sequestered and a gag order was put in place.

After the proceedings came to a close, a somber, stone faced, Jeffery Denby was led, in cuffs, to a squad car. He was then taken back to jail, where he awaits trial.

I wrote a comment right after hers telling her I disagreed with her. That these pictures allow JT a voice, and for people to see what child abuse really is. It isn't just a spanking... Jt's pictures allows for awareness. I also commented that I hope they use these pictures in court and plaster these pictures all over jeff's cell walls so that he never forgets what he did to a child that was less than a year and a half old.

Denby pleads not guilty to murder in toddler death
Jeffrey Denby, accused in the beating death of an 18 month-old toddler in June, pleaded not guilty to first degree murder Thursday.
Denby entered his plea in front of 36th Judicial District Judge Martha Ann O'Neal.
The State then motioned to fix the trial for January 19, 2010 at 9 a.m.
The Court advised the State that it has 30 days to make the election if this matter will be a capital case and carry the death penalty.
On June 19, Denby was originally charged with Attempted First Degree Murder. Upon the death on the child, however, those charges were upgraded to First Degree Murder and is currently being held with no bond.
The victim was the child of his fiance, Holly A. Brewer. She has since been charged with Accessory After the Fact in regards to allegations that she gave false information at the hospital regarding the child's injuries and withheld information of past abuse of the child.
Denby allegedly started beating the child when he tipped over a bassinet holding Denby's own two-month old child. When the mother returned home she found her son unresponsive and took him to a local hospital where authorities were notified by the emergency room physician.
Denby is also currently serving a sentence for parole violation. In 2007, he was charged with Aggravated Flight from an Officer and Simple Criminal Damage to Property and released on parole.
According to court documents he was the "driver of a motor vehicle and refused to bring the vehicle to a stop, knowing he had been given visual and audible signal to stop by a Louisiana State Police Officer. The Officer had reasonable grounds to believe the defendant committed an offense, under circumstances wherein human life was endangered. The defendant exceeded the posted speed limit by at least 25 miles per hour, left the roadway and collided with another vehicle."
He also plead guilty of Simple Criminal Damage to Property. This offense came as a result of "Intentionally damaging a Ford sedan, without the consent of the owner. Damages totaled greater than $500."

Brewer arraigned
Holly A. Brewer, 20, was arraigned on a felony charge Monday afternoon.

Brewer was arraigned on a charge of Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles. She is accused of giving false information about previous abuse of her 18-month old son.

Brewer’s son died June 21, reportedly as a result of abuse by her then fiance, Jeffery P. Denby.

Court documents read, “Holly A. Brewer, after the commission of a felony, Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles, did aid Jeffery P. Denby, knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe Jeffery P. Denby had committed Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles, and with the intent that Jeffery P. Denby may avoid or escape arrest, trial, conviction or punishment.”

In Brewer’s hearing Monday, bond was reduced from $150,000 to $50,000 and counsel waived a preliminary hearing.

Trial is scheduled to commence on February 16, 2010 at 9 a.m.
