This kind of thing makes my blood boil - abusing and neglecting the most fragile in our society.
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Several health care reports have been released this week, claiming aide hired to take care of severely ill children have been neglecting them.
The victims in this case were two brothers who suffer from a congenital disease that requires a feeding pump and ventilator.
The nurse admitted to vulgar behavior and depriving the children of medication.
The parents of two children, who requiring around the clock care, installed an undercover video camera.
What they saw lead to a state investigation and possible criminal charges. She said the video showed the aide turning off the feeding pump, bringing male callers to the home and having sex on the job.
The woman worked for Divine Healthcare Network. The report released by the Minnesota Office of Health Facility Complaints discovered that worker had often slept on the job, took frequent smoking breaks, leaving the children unattended, regularly disconnected feeding their tubes and was even caught on tape, having sex with a male friend in the kids room.
Christina Stevenson works for Divine Healthcare Network.
“We do reference checks and the background checks and skills test and all that before they're hired,” said Stevenson.
Over a seven month period in 2008, one of the patients lost 23 pounds and was hospitalized because of malnutrition.
To cover her tracks, it was discovered the aide would fill out the charts at the beginning of her shift without ever having performed the necessary work.
The certified nursing assistant had worked for the company for just over a year.
In a written statement, the aide accepted sole responsibility for neglecting the two children.
Divine Healthcare was cleared of any wrong-going and says the family is still a client.
