COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- Three people upset that a news crew was reporting on the arrest of a relative attacked the television reporter and yelled racial slurs at her and a photographer, authorities said Tuesday.

A news crew reporting on an arrest was attacked by the subject's family, authorities said.

The family members, all white, began yelling and charged at black WSPA-TV reporter Charmayne Brown while she was standing in the street near the family's home in Union, said news director Alex Bongiorno.

Brown was punched in the head, and black cameraman Ti Barnes was also struck as he tried to pull family members off Brown, Bongiorno said. A video of the attack shows Brown, who wasn't seriously injured, defending herself. Watch how attack unfolded »

"I think she's more affected by the verbal abuse than the physical abuse. She's really shaken up," Bongiorno said.

The fight was taped by a white crew from a second television station. They were not attacked.

Tousha Smith, 31, Billie Joe Taylor, 31, and Trina Vinson, 48, were being held at a Union jail on Tuesday evening on assault and battery charges, authorities said. South Carolina has no law allowing a hate crime charge.

Attempts to contact the family were unsuccessful; messages left at several numbers were not immediately returned, and authorities said they weren't sure whether the three had attorneys.

Charges are pending against a fourth person, authorities said. The reporter and photographer were not charged.

Brown was reporting on the death of 73-year-old Tommy Howell, who was killed by a blow to the head after an argument, authorities said. His body was found Tuesday in his home. Police arrested his grandson, Shane Howell, and charged him with murder, Union Police Chief Sam White said.

Shane Howell remains in jail, and it is unclear whether he has an attorney.

"These people were very upset," White said. "I guess they just took it out the wrong way."

Athena, while it may seem that more racist crimes occur in the south, you have to understand, also, that there is a larger ratio of black to white, and even Mexican to white, in the south than in the north. Therefore there will be a higher likelihood of racially motivated crimes south of the Mason/Dixon line. Don't judge the general populace based on the asinine actions of a few racist assholes.

According to the article, it was also a white news crew who has provided the means (and proof), with which to convict these white trash throwbacks, of assault. While I understand that this doesn't mitigate the actions of the family, it does seem to prove that there are just as many good people as bad here. On both ends of the color spectrum, and I would guess everywhere in between. And those of us who do believe in equality for all are mortified by the actions of the racist element, because of the damage it does, and also because it reflects badly on all of us, not just the 'haters'. :( :o

Not when I'm already pissed about the other atrocities discussed on DD, it doesn't. :D And even though you were joking, there are many who actually feel that way. And no wonder, when assholes act like these. I guess I'm too defensive on this subject because up until the last two generations in my family, most of my family were racists, and it has always sickened me to know that I was raised around a bunch of intolerant, ignorant jackasses. I've read enough of your posts, though, that I should have known better. *Angel goes to surgically extract foot from esophagus*;)

Actually, I happen to be particularly fond of southerners. Hell, just last night I was talking to someone about my boss giving notice yesterday. He suggested she might just not come back for the two weeks, to which I replied, "No...She's southern. She's better than that." :p

Maybe it's one too many Gone With The Winds, or the fact that I'm a sucker for a genteel accent, but there are qualities that southerners possess that I just haven't found anywhere else. So, yeah...I like to give you folks a hard time, but it's not out of spite, I can assure you. :)

DML, I am against all forms of racism - black on white, white on black, white on Mex, Mex on white, Black on Mex, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. I once summed it up for a friend of mine who wasn't really SURE that all the races were equal. When we hurt, we all cry tears, and when we bleed, we all bleed red. And if I was lying on the side of a road bleeding to death, I don't give even a half a damn what color the blood donor is whose donation saves my life. Conversely, when I donate blood, I don't put 'only black' or 'only white' or 'only Mexican'. I want my blood to go to whoever is in need of it.

The entire race issue has become a joke in and of itself in the last 3 or 4 decades anyway. Everybody's being discriminated against for something: women's rights, black rights, mentally handicapped, physically handicapped, blonde, redhead, tall, short,..... Sometimes I think the only true minority in this country anymore is the average white male. That's just about the only group of people who don't have their own human rights organization lobbying for more favors. I think we should do away with all of the bullshit, and go with the best candidate for whatever job is needing to be done, race and religious beliefs be damned!

Sorry y'all, this is me ranting again. I'll go away now and count my marbles just to see if they're all still there. :D
