LAURENS, S.C. -- A black civil rights activist is still fighting to close a South Carolina store that sells KKK robes and racist T-shirts in a building that he said he owns.

The store, called the Redneck Shop, operates in a building in Laurens, S.C.

Court records show it was transferred in 1997 to David Kennedy and the Baptist church he leads.

However, the legal documents also indicate that the man who runs the store has the right to operate it out of the building until he dies.

Kennedy has led protests outside the store since it opened in 1996, but he said the agreement has prevented him from closing it.

Store owner John Howard said he's not selling anything illegal and people "shouldn't come in" if they're turned off by the store.

The dispute may now head to court.

__________

Why even take it to court? The legal documentation seems pretty clear to me...

The owner needs to fuck off. When he bought it, there wasn't some hidden secret regarding the status of this store. It was there at the time, and it remained clear that it would get to stay. Just because he offended by the store's content, and rightly so I might add, it does not entitle him to violate a legal contract. He has a few legal options that he could use. One would be paying the guy to leave. Another would be, depending on whether or not part of the building is vacant and able to be used, would be to create some sort of black-oriented bar or club that would piss off the redneck and perhaps turn his customers away. Or he could keep up this protesting, working with lunatics like the NOI to gain larger support. But nowhere among his options is going back on a contract.

Suppy and demand. I don't this store as any more dangerous than the all African American store a block away from my house that sells movies depicting "black rage" in the front window. If we are going to eliminate this type of racial prejudice then I have no problem with both stores being shut down.

Sounds like he bought it just to incite problems. What is freedon of speech and freedom of expression if we don't have the opportunity to do it?
He bought it with those stipulations and that is the way it will probably end in court.

Can you get me one that says "I hate everybody!"? Don't want to discriminate....I can wear a small, but I still prefer at least a size large; I'm more interested in comfort than style..... and then buy me a drink from the bar the building owner 'should open to piss them off'! I think that would be a hoot. Two opposing forces doing their best to piss each other off, all in the name of free speech! Classic!

Tune in next week for the sequel to this story, entitled "Race Riot in Laurens S.C." Bring a bag of popcorn, and a coke Icee..... and don't forget the confetti!:D
