MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Police have found the body of a woman inside a Martinsburg home and arrested a former boyfriend accused of taking her hostage.
State Police Capt. Rob Blair told The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Md., the standoff that began Sunday morning ended Monday afternoon after officers lobbed gas into the home. He said a medical examiner was called to the scene.
Additional details were unavailable. Blair didn't immediately return a telephone message from The Associated Press.
Police earlier identified the suspect as Donald Berkeley Surber, 37, of Winchester, Va.
Nine families in the neighborhood had been moved to a shelter and were allowed to return to their homes about 3 p.m. Monday.

This happened not 20 minutes from me, in the home my husband and his father painted. I don't know the "suspect" or the victim but this is incredibly sad.

I wonder how good their hostage negotiation team was? Apparently, not very good.

Winchester resident Donald Surber is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend Katherine Sharp, after holding her hostage at a residence in Martinsburg, WV for 26 hours last Sunday into Monday.
Surber was arrested and was being held at the Eastern Regional Jail, in West Virginia.
Friday, police say they transported Surber to West Virginia University Hospital-East, after finding lacerations on his wrist.
As crews were getting ready to take Surber back, police say a fight ensued in the emergency room, and Surber was shot in the chest.
Officials tell TV3 News, Surber was airlifted to Winchester Medical Center and is in critical condition.
Surber faces kidnapping and murder charges.

I knew I'd find more about this. Nothing official, but my father-in-law said that he heard that the guy not only shot her and slit her throat, he cut her open, ground up her heart and put it back in her chest. Now that's very morbid and I don't know how credible he is...so don't quote me on that.

A Winchester, Va., man charged in the stabbing death of his girlfriend during a two-day police standoff in June was denied bond Monday during a hearing in Berkeley County Circuit Court.
Donald B. Surber, 37, is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Katherine Nicole Sharp, with whom he had an on-and-off relationship, according to Berkeley County Prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely.

Lawson also told Wilkes that Surber would like to represent himself during court proceedings.
According to court records, Surber held Sharp hostage in her home on June 14 and 15.
A warrant charging Surber with murder said Sharp was killed June 14. The 26-hour standoff ended on the afternoon of June 15, court records state.
Surber attempted suicide by cutting his wrists while in the Eastern Regional Jail after his arrest, and he later tried to escape police guards after being treated for his wounds at City Hospital in Martinsburg, according to published reports.
One of two officers guarding Surber shot him once, hitting him in the arm and torso, after Surber lunged for the other officer’s gun, police said.
Surber was treated for the gunshot wounds at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center and returned to Berkeley County under heavy guard, police have said.

It was revealed in court Monday that Surber previously was charged with kidnapping a woman he was dating in Winchester. He took her to Richmond, Va., against her will, Lawson said.
Lawson told Wilkes the Virginia case was pleaded down to a misdemeanor. Surber and the victim later reconciled, married and had children together, Lawson said.
