Stephen Gordon, the Wesleyan shooting wacko, is due in court today regarding a probable cause hearing.

Stephen Morgan has not yet entered a plea to charges he shot and killed a Wesleyan University student in a bookstore café last month.

He will be back in court Tuesday, where he is expected to decide whether to waive his right to a probable cause hearing on the evidence police used to arrest him, the Middletown Press reports.

Morgan, 29, is accused of shooting and killing Johanna Justin-Jinich on May 6 at the Red and Black Cafe inside Broad Street Books. On May 7, Morgan turned himself in to police after seeing his photo in a local newspaper. He remains in jail on $15 million bond.

The shooting disrupted life at Wesleyan, in the city of Middletown and for the Jewish community after police found a journal with threats, including ant-Semitic rants like "I think it's ok to kill Jews and go on a killing spree." It also says "Kill Johanna. She must Die," according to an arrest warrant.

Search warrants for Morgan’s car and motel room were recently unsealed and show the path Morgan likely took to Middletown based on receipts found, the Press reports.

May 1:
Massachusetts Turnpike receipt

May 2:
Wendy’s in Richmond, R.I.
Hyannis Travel Inn in Hyannis, Mass.
Parking garage at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks.

May 6: The day Justin-Jinich was killed.
Burger King in Willington
Gas station on Washington Street in Middletown.
Police obtained search warrant for Morgan’s room at America’s Best Value Inn and searched the room.

May 7: Morgan turns himself in.

reading this made me think how the gears of justice grind so slowly that by the time a case is being adjudicated, it's faded from emotional memory, replaced by newer outrages. that's probably a good thing, because a wounded community could really lash out in ways that we'd regret years hence.

this crime put everyone in my area, the Middletown/Wesleyan community into a tizzy for two days last month. My kids' elementary school was locked down, the cheapo motel at the end of our quiet residential street was a psycho killer's home for a night (yay that was fun), and a beloved bookstore is now an infamous crime scene. then this frickin maniac decided to melt down and freak everyone out at a convenience store next to my mother's house (he turned himself in without incident). we were beyond relieved when this nightmare was over.

I'm paraphrasing some of what i commented on the front page when this crime occurred:

The day of the murder, I drove right through campus on my way home (its in the middle of town) clueless that there was any problem. I couldn’t understand where all the students were, and there were some cops nonchalantly leaning against their cruisers here and there. They didn’t even give my vehicle a glance, much less a second glance. I didn’t find out what the deal was till I got home and turned on the news.

In retrospect, isn’t it weird that I was able to drive around the campus, unchallenged by security or police? Weren’t they supposed to be being vigilant especially when a non-official vehicle was just drivin thru? Just sayin.

I think the whole anti-semitism angle with this guy is a red herring, and that he’s not so much a racist/anti-semite as a regular ol’ psycho-stalker.

I bet if the woman he targeted were asian or black, he would’ve formed a hateful delusion about that group instead. He wanted to obliterate her and anything that she was part of, because she rejected his psycho, stalking asz. For example, the “Wesleyan Community” was also part of her identity, so that gives me the idea he was just generally warped with hatred regarding this particular woman.

It's terrible that he had the freedom to pursue and finally kill her even after she filed charges in 2007... she later declined to pursue the charges, like so many other stalking victims. Unfortunately, just like pedophiles, stalkers don’t stop until someone or something stops them.

btw... when i call him "psycho" i mean crazy, but not legally insane. he may have been quite paranoid, and possibly verging on delusional, but he knew right from wrong, and he needs to pay dearly for the young life he took.

RIP Johanna.

Oct 17th, 2009 | MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Documents filed in the case of a slain Wesleyan University student say she changed her e-mail address because she worried about a man trying to resume contact with her.

The recently filed search warrant affidavits don't say if the man was Stephen Morgan, who is accused of fatally shooting Johanna Justin-Jinich in May inside a cafe near campus.

The documents indicate a friend told police that Justin-Jinich said someone she knew from New York University was contacting her by e-mail, and she wanted nothing to do with him.

The documents say she changed her e-mail address, but the man found it.

Justin-Jinich filed a harassment complaint against Morgan when both attended a class at NYU. Morgan has denied killing her.

Ms. Justin-Jinich and Mr. Morgan had met briefly two years earlier when both attended a summer course at New York University. He called repeatedly and sent 38 harassing e-mail messages. The university and the police were notified by Ms. Justin-Jinich, but he had left town and she declined to press charges.

Mr. Morgan left his car, with Colorado license plates, in the bookstore parking lot, and in it his notebook journal and laptop computer. In the journal, the police later discovered what may have been an even more diabolical plot - to rape and kill Ms. Justin-Jinich and then go on a shooting spree on the Wesleyan campus.

Sounds like lots of people got lucky that day. Too bad Johanna, who was gorgeous and contributed to the world, didn't.

A Massachusetts man was found not guilty by reason of insanity Friday in the 2009 shooting death of a Wesleyan University student after a trial that portrayed him as anti-Semitic and mentally ill as he stalked and harassed the young woman.A three-judge panel agreed with the defense for 32-year-old Stephen Morgan, who will be committed to Connecticut's maximum-security psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane.
