Ohh poor baby, strike 3 your outa here, Wonder what he didn't learn the 2 other times he went to prison??? Florida doesn't like armed felon dumbass, you knew the rules. 10/20/LIFE!!! . LoL the best deal he could get for a plea deal was 30 years, yikesss.
DADE CITY — Authorities say Morris Standifer stormed into a Mexican convenience store one afternoon 2 1/2 years ago, waving a gun and demanding money. His trial on the robbery charge that could send him to prison for life was set to begin Monday.
Using a pen and his own blood, Standifer, 27, made sure it didn't. He had been emotional all morning, said one of his public defenders, Dillon Vizcarra. Flat. Tearful. Quiet.
Standifer's mother, who attends all of his court hearings, told the judge she was worried her son didn't understand what was happening. An offer was on the table from prosecutors: 30 years in prison if Standifer pleaded to the charge.
Circuit Judge Pat Siracusa went over it with him to make sure he understood. Standifer said little. Vizcarra noticed Standifer crying softly. "I said, 'Judge, can we just have five minutes, let him pull himself together?' " Vizcarra said.
As he walked back to the defense table, Vizcarra noticed blood on the right sleeve of his client's white shirt. It was dripping on the legal pad, too. He and the other attorneys walked back up to tell the judge. "Mr. Standifer, are you okay over there?" Siracusa asked him. Standifer just glanced up, said nothing.
He had cut a 3-inch gash across his wrist using the pen Vizcarra gave him to take notes with during the trial. Paramedics took Standifer to a hospital for stitches, Vizcarra said. He was not gravely injured.
The incident postponed Standifer's trial for the Nov. 16, 2006, robbery of the del Carmen Mexican store. According to authorities, a masked gunman charged into the Seventh Street store — a general store, butcher shop and bakery frequented by Dade City's Hispanic population — and pointed a gun at the clerk, yelling at her to open the cash registers. He made off with a wad of money, dropping a few bills as he struggled to get out the door.
As police rushed over, employees saw the man hiding behind a tree by a carwash a few hundred feet north of the store. Then he ran east into a neighborhood. A few minutes later, Dade City police arrested Standifer, who was hiding under a house on Eighth Street, authorities said. By the tree, they found a mask and gun.
Standifer has already been to prison twice, one of those times also for robbery. Because of his prior history, prosecutors are seeking a sentencing enhancement that would mandate a life sentence if he loses at trial.
The case was reset for a hearing in about a month. In the meantime, Standifer will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
