A 30-year-old North Platte man pleaded not guilty to three counts of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony child abuse and having methamphetamine around children.
Tyler Weaver, 1153 S. Tyler, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, Clonazepam and THC. He will face a trial on the charges Aug. 18.
Weaver was already in jail for burglary and possession of burglary tools after he allegedly broke into an apartment at the South Platte Terrace Apartments April 7 and stole a Playstation that he had sold to the residents for $250 just a month before.
The drug charges stem from a search warrant served on Weaver and his girlfriend’s home March 19.
Weaver’s girlfriend, Zenobia Tyrell, 26, also lived in the house with her three children ages 2, 5 and 7.
The Department of Health and Human Services received a complaint in March that Weaver and Tyrell were using drugs in the home and that living conditions were substandard.
According to an affidavit, the caller “felt sorry for the children” and that they were always “filthy dirty.” The caller reported that the children were not dressed properly for the winter weather, the affidavit said.
Social workers and police officers interviewed the children at school. One of the children reported that there was a needle and syringe laying on the floor of the house and said that Tyrell nearly stepped on it. The child said Tyrell and Weaver were always talking about “smoking pot.”
Another of the children reported where the pipes and syringes were stored. Both children drew pictures of the syringes.
The affidavit said officials served the warrant and found the house to be filthy with dirty clothes piled everywhere, filthy floors and used pull-up diapers lying on the floor. The beds were broken and had no sheets or bedding and there was little food in the house.
Officials located dirty spoons, glass pipes, loose marijuana and a number of pills.
Officers arrested Tyrell that day. She was charged with the same charges Weaver eventually would get.
Officers also took custody of the three children. They are now under the care of HHS.
But officers could not immediately locate Weaver.
After his arrest April 7, officers went into the jail and cited him with the additional drug charges.
