Louisville Metro Police have arrested a man on assault charges after he admitted to shaking and beating his girlfriend’s 8-month-old baby.
Matthew E. Vaughn, 20, has been charged with one count each of first-degree assault and criminal abuse after allegedly causing severe head trauma that was not consistent with an accidental injury, according to an arrest citation.
The baby was in serious condition today at Kosair Children’s Hospital, said Lt. Barry Wilkerson, head of the police homicide unit. The arrest citation said the infant was unconscious and unresponsive.
Wilkerson said the incident happened Sunday in the 400 block of Inglewood Drive in southern Jefferson County. He said Vaughn cared for the baby regularly and lived near his girlfriend and the infant lived. He said the infant’s mother was at work at the time of the incident.
Vaughn admitted to shaking and slamming the child on the floor multiple times, police said. Wilkerson did not specify a reason for the assault, but said he became “frustrated” with the baby.
He is being held at Metro Corrections.

Slamming the baby on the floor several times. That is so beyond frustration. He had time to realize what he was doing.

Oh, he thought it was a literal bouncing baby boy.

The police report also says the baby, currently in very serious condition at Kosair Children's Hospital, isn't expected to survive her injuries. If she doesn't, police say the assault charge against Vaughn will be upgraded to murder.http://www.wqmf.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=283307&article=5573966

A nine-month-old girl who had to be hospitalized Sunday after police said she was beaten by her mother’s boyfriend has died.
Karlie Mellick was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m. at Kosair Children’s Hospital, said Larry Carroll, a Jefferson County deputy coroner.
He said an official cause of death has not been released pending the results of an autopsy. Those results may not be released until tomorrow, he said.
Matthew E. Vaughn, 20, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and criminal abuse after the incident took place in the 400 block of Inglewood Drive in southern Jefferson County on Sunday.
Lt. Barry Wilkerson, head of the Louisville Metro Police homicide unit, said the charges against Vaughn could now be upgraded because the girl has died and police are consulting with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.

im just gonna say that i know the boyfriend personally-he is a family friend-he had always been around my kids and his nieces and nephew and had watched them off and on since birth and has never even said a cross word to any of them-i believe he is covering for someone (possibly the mother) cause she cant quit askin about him-sayn she misses and loves him-that should be the last person that shes worried about-especially if he is the one that ALLEGEDLLY hurt her child-for real people-trust me it will all come out-he is innocent and we r gonna prove it-----i am sooo sorry for anyone that has lost a child but with her suspicious behavior she should be worried about her baby and not him-why would u care about someone that hurt ur baby-we miss baby karlie soooo much and wish she was still here--and whoever did this should rot in hell-just not matt cause i truly believe that he would never hurt a child---in the end, i will b right

Karlie turned 9 months old, the day she died *sigh*
When I read about these innocent and defenseless babies, beaten, molested and tortured, my heart totally breaks, I shed tears for them and I get angry. I usually tell myself, to stop reading about them, ignore the stories, you can't change the world!! I am not able to stop!! But, I, I just want God to give me the wisdom to perpetuate a change, legally, so that no child has to suffer! I listen to the Holy Spirit, really I do, so far all I know to do is pray. I have written my Senators and Congressman (received few acknowledgments) and the law makers have responded, said, that takes time and full approval of the Congress!! SO, I have surmised, that GOD, is the only answer, we, all of us, should agree in prayer, asking GOD, to send rescuers,His angels, before the spawn of satan appears in the innocents life, before

An accomplished deer hunter, Kara Mellick has felled a 7- and 10-point buck. The antlers hang in her living room.
A motivated student, she graduated from Fairdale High School with perfect attendance and is putting herself through college.
But as a devoted mother, Mellick, 23, couldn’t prevent her infant daughter’s violent death from abuse three years ago at the hands of a man living in her home.
“It kills me every time I think about it,” said Mellick, whose 9-month-old baby, Karlie, was fatally battered while Mellick was at work. “I don’t understand how can you take out that much frustration on a baby that’s totally innocent.”
Now, Mellick has decided to talk publicly about her story in hopes of preventing other such deaths. It’s part of a regional public service campaign, led by Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, that is dedicated to ending child abuse deaths.
Mellick, who lives in Southern Indiana, will become the face of that campaign, along with Ebony Carson, 23, a Louisville mother whose son, Cornell, now almost 2, survived a beating in late October that left him disabled with a severe brain injury. They will appear in videos, advertisements and in other material promoting the effort.
