State police arrested a Jefferson Township man on Saturday for allegedly endangering the welfare of an infant.
The incident occurred on April 13 when John A. Catania, 23, of Elmdale Court, brought the victim to Wayne Memorial Hospital for an arm injury.
State police say that Catania told the hospital staff that the seven-month old infant would not stop crying and was fussy.
He allegedly related that he put the infant in bed with him and fell asleep; he later caught the infant by the arm before it fell off the bed, causing the arm injury.
His relationship to the infant was not detailed in the police report.
A hospital examination revealed that the infant had a spiral fracture of the arm: the bone is twisted apart.
A slap mark was also discovered across the victim’s face, along with bruises on the victim’s buttock.
Examining doctors further indicated that the injury could not have happened as it was described by Catania, state police report.
Catania was arraigned before Lackawanna County District Judge Alyce Farrell on Saturday on charges of simple assault, reckless endangering another person, and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was placed in Lackawanna County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
