Deputies say Alexander Edward Lynch of Columbia picked up the two-month-old male child and shook him until the child was unresponsive.

Investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department arrested Lynch of Columbia on Saturday for a bench warrant and charged him Sunday with abuse that involves the infliction of great bodily injury upon a child.

According to deputies, Lynch was responsible for looking after four children, including the two-month-old, a two-year-old, a three-year-old and a five-year-old. Investigators say Lynch was caring for the children in an apartment where he lives with his girlfriend who was not home at the time of the incident.

Deputies say Lynch placed the baby on a bed after shaking him, and brought a bottle to the child in an effort to feed him. Investigators say the child did not drink from the bottle, as he was unresponsive.

According to deputies, Lynch then took the baby to his girlfriend's mother's apartment to get help. Lexington County EMS arrived to the apartment and determined the baby was unresponive. The child was transported by ambulance to Lexington Medical Center and then transferred to Palmetto Health Richland.

Lynch is being detained at the Lexington County jail on $100,000 bond. If he's convicted of the charge, he faces up to 20 years in prison. He was served with a magistrate bench warrant for a fine of $237.50 or a 30-day jail sentence after being convicted of defacing a license plate.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman said Rashard Lynch died about 1:20 p.m. Monday, two days after being hospitalized for severe brain injuries. The infant was being treated for brain swelling consistent with shaken baby syndrome. An autopsy is set for Tuesday.

Sheriff James Metts said the charge against the baby's father, Alexander Lynch of Columbia, will be upgraded Tuesday to homicide by child abuse.http://www.charlotteobserver.com/233/story/770313.html
