A Warren County grand jury has indicted an Amelia man accused of trying to entice an 11-year-old Deerfield Twp. boy into his van.

Lonnie Gene Kennedy, 54, of Amelia, allegedly approached the boy on May 4 at a school bus stop south of U.S. 22/Ohio 3 near St. Margaret of York in Deerfield Twp., police said.

Kennedy allegedly asked the child if he would like to get in his vehicle to play video games. The child refused to get into the vehicle and when the suspect noticed a school bus approaching, he left the area, deputies said.

Kennedy, charged with child enticement, a fifth-degree felony, was convicted of raping a minor in Kentucky in Kentucky in 1982, according to Warren County Sheriff Larry Sims.

Kennedy has been housed at the Warren County Jail on a $350,000 bond.

Lonnie Gene Kennedy, 54, faced his accuser at the Mason Municipal Court, where the boy broke down in tears as he identified Kennedy as the man who invited him into a white van to play video games.

"'Can you play in the van with the Xbox?' and I said no," the boy testified. "He said, 'Why not?' and I said, 'I don't know you,' and he said, 'Do you want to play something else?' and I said no. And once he saw the bus come with the lights flashing, he left."

The boy described the van as white, with rust on the sides and curtains in the windows, but defense attorneys fought back during the preliminary hearing.

Kennedy's attorneys said his van did not have curtains and did not match the description the boy gave.

Kennedy's adult children were also present at the court hearing, and they told News 5's Karin Johnson that their father's arrest was a case of mistaken identity.

The case against Kennedy was bound over for a Warren County grand jury, and he remains held on $350,000 bond.

Kennedy was convicted in 1982 of rape in Kentucky, and he is also under investigation in connection with attempted abductions in Hamilton, Clermont and Warren counties over the past two months.
