Two parents are in police custody after an officer found their Kosciusko County home so filthy he called Child Protective Services.

Officers arrested John and Mary Ann Hale on Wednesday.

Police say they got an anonymous phone call that the home wasn't safe for the couple's child.

When the officer arrived, he found trash and clothes covering the inside of the trailer, with only a single path to walk through the living room. In a report, the officer described the conditions in the home as "atrocious."

A small electrical heater inside was the only source of heat.

The officer called CPS to place their 7-year-old son in protective custody when he arrived home from school.

The county health department later condemned the home. Animal Control took all the animals inside.

The Hales face Neglect of a Dependent charges.

Man no one should have to live like that. Let alone a 7 year old who has no choice. I hope the boy ends up adopted by a good family.

They even rescued a dog and a cat from that trash hole.

The family’s dog and cat were also removed from the home, police said.

Hill said police had been called to the home last year when a passing motorist complained that the family’s dog looked unnourished.

An animal control officer spoke to John Hale at the time and he told the officer that he did not have money to buy the animal food. When the officer returned the next day, Hill said, dog food had been bought.

Neither the child nor the animals appeared to have suffered any physical abuse, Hill said.

Health department officials condemned the home and will determine whether it must be demolished, Hill said.

How can people live in such filth? I will never understand how they were even able to go in and use that bathroom with it looking like that. Can you imagine the smell? Ugh!

Couldn't they have cleaned while Jerry Springer was on a commercial break?
