An elderly Seattle woman found living in deplorable conditions in December, bedridden and suffering from dementia in her Beacon Hill home, is now in the care of a Renton nursing home. Her 54-year-old daughter, who was her caregiver, is charged with felony counts of criminal mistreatment and theft.
The King County Prosecutor's Office this week filed charges against Margaret A. George, saying she recklessly created an imminent and substantial risk to her mother's life.
Seattle police detectives said the immobile 83-year-old woman appeared to have been neglected for an extended period of time before authorities entered her home in the 4900 block of 26th Avenue South and discovered her.
Police and medics found her confined to her bed, infested with maggots and surrounded by feces and urine. According to police, a relative of the elderly woman called police after being unable to reach her.
In charging papers, prosecutors said George, who said she had been unemployed for three years, withdrew $13,000 from her mother's bank account to buy a car, and had transferred more than $40,000 from a joint account she shared with her mother into an account in her own name.
Bank records showed a number of questionable purchases, and large cash withdrawals made at casinos in Auburn and Marysville.
If found guilty of the two counts, George could be sentenced to 12 to 14 months in prison, the standard sentencing range, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
George is scheduled to be arraigned June 9 in King County Superior Court.http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2009279728_charges30m.html
