Jerome Walker, 33, and Matrice Mitchem, 24, of Kansas City, Mo., have been charged with child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. The boy was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital after police were alerted to the injuries on Wednesday by a case worker with the Missouri Division of Family Services.
A case worker alerted police after the boy was found with bruises on his face, back, arms and legs. Court documents showed a doctor at Children's Mercy told police that the boy has a rib fracture.
Police said Walker admitted to the abuse -- and Mitchem confessed she knew what was going on but was afraid to get medical treatment for her son.http://www.kctv5.com/news/19606332/detail.html
JACKSON COUNTY, MO. - A woman has been charged with child abuse after prosecutors said she knew a man was abusing a 5-year-old boy.
Jerome Walker and Matrice Mitchem both face child abuse charges. Prosecutors say a case worker noticed bruises on a child on his face, back, buttocks, shoulders and ribcage. The child also had a noticeable limp and a cut on his lower lip. X-rays indicated the child had a rib fracture.
When asked, court documents say, the child said "daddy did it."
According to court documents, Walker admitted to abusing the child as police were booking him. He said he hit the boy because he was trying to drink from the lid of an aerosol can.
According to investigators, Mitchem later admitted she knew about the abuse. But, said she didn't report it because Walker had slapped her before and she was afraid she would be blamed for the bruises.
