A Statesville man was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after police said he jumped from a moving car with his small child in his arms.
Adam J. Jones, 25, was arrested Thursday night.
Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson said police received a call that Jones was under the influence of drugs and was riding in a vehicle with his daughter in his lap, not in a child restraint seat.
Officers located the vehicle at the Food Lion on Wilkes-boro Highway, and Jones jumped out while the car was moving, Anderson said. He was still holding the child in his arms, he said.
The girl was not injured and was returned to her mother.
