Officials at the Washington Corrections Center near Shelton and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate who was found hanging in his cell Thursday morning. The Department of Corrections says 58-year-old Michael Gilstrap was discovered by his cellmate and corrections officers hanging from a bed sheet that had been tied to the bars of his cell about 5 AM. CPR was performed and aid called but attempts to revive Gilstrap were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead about 5:30. Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell has ruled the death a suicide as an autopsy revealed the cause of death as cerebral anoxia due to hanging. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate and the D-O-C is conducting an internal review. Gilstrap was serving a five-year sentence for second-degree assault of a child. He arrived at the Washington Corrections Center on May 20. The Shelton prison currently houses about 1,300 offenders. It is a close-custody facility and is the reception center where all adult male offenders are classified before being assigned to other facilities.

Oh, good. One more taken out of the gene pool.

Unfortunately, at 58, he may have already contributed to the gene pool.

I'm telling you, though, this is one reason why society should not be required to try to prevent suicide. Suicide CAN be a good thing. In fact, I know several people, personally, who I think should highly consider it.

What a shame Michael didn't have a chance to meet Bubba first before he hung himself. He was at a holding prison were they acclimate you , then send you off on your merry way to a real prison.

Prisoners are (unfortunately) awarded certain rights. One of those is medical care. If prison officials don't respond "accordingly" it opens the institution (and officers) up for a wrongful death, negligence or gross negligence law suit. Unfortunately. Prison guards are trained on a variety of topics, first aid (CPR) is one.
