Police said the mother, 19-year-old Christina Marie Johnson, told them that the baby was found kneeling at the foot of the car seat.
The child was declared dead at the scene.
The death is being called suspicious, and the baby's body was sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. Detectives are waiting for autopsy results to get the exact cause of death.
Star Police Chief Dempsey Owens said the preliminary autopsy showed that the child had six broken ribs and one broken tibia, all in different stages of healing.
Johnson and the baby's father, 27-year-old Filiberto Cortez Sanchez, are being held under a $50,000 bond in the Montgomery County Jail in Troy.
Owens said Johnson and Sanchez are being held on felony child abuse and child neglect charges. He said, so far, no one has been charged with the baby's death.
Owens said Sanchez is in the country illegally and could be a flight risk. He said he has been trying to get more evidence to hold him.
