DEERFIELD, Ill., May 29 (UPI) -- Police say they are looking for an unidentified woman who stole $20 from a 12-year-old as the child was trying to buy ice cream in Deerfield, Ill.

Police said the female suspect, thought to be in her 40s, took the girl's money at a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store, before fleeing the scene with three young children, The Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

The woman, who police suspect is a regular customer of the store, took the $20 from a store counter after distracting the girl. The woman diverted the child's attention from the cash by asking her about her favorite flavor of ice cream, police said.

Police told the Tribune the May 15 theft was captured by a video surveillance camera at the store. No arrests or official suspects in the ice cream theft were reported. http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2009/05/29/Police-Woman-stole-kids-ice-cream-money/UPI-80191243627092/

A 12-year-old girl left the money there while she and a friend chose their ice cream flavor, and the woman is seen on a surveillance camera picking up her own ice cream order and the twenty. It wasn't clear from the video whether the woman's grab was intentional or unconscious, but police had asked her to come forward to clear up the matter and had heard nothing from her.

On Tuesday, the woman's husband became nervous when he saw a squad car driving near the couple's home. He panicked and turned the woman in to police.

Police say the woman admitted taking the money, but said it was just an absent-minded accident.

She won't face any charges and has agreed to pay the little girl back.

Baskin-Robbins has already offered to throw a free ice cream party for the girl and her friends.

in the video it does look like she wasn't purposely stealing. she was lingering right nearby after tucking away the 20, and i think if she was consciously taking the money, she'd have been outta there much more quickly.

but she shoulda come right back to the store as soon as she knew that she'd done this.
