CROWN POINT -- Lake County officials will announce charges today in the beating death of 3-year-old Austin Seese, who died in January from massive head injuries in a Gary home.

Kevin McKaskle, 26, Austin's mother's boyfriend, is being held in a Nebraska jail on unrelated charges. Lake County police placed a hold on him last week hours before he was set to be released because investigators feared he and the boy's mother, Danielle Willard, would flee the area.

Seese died Jan. 31 at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago, four days after he was transferred there from The Methodist Hospitals in Gary with multiple injuries. Medical personnel saw a gang-like drawing on his chest that investigators later linked to McKaskle, a self-described "gangster rapper."

Gary police were the initial investigators on the case, but after two months, supervisors said they were still waiting for information from the Cook County Medical Examiner before they could proceed.

In April, Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez learned of the case and assigned Investigative Commander Shaw Spurlock to review the circumstances of Austin's death.

When Spurlock began questioning family, co-workers and friends of McKaskle and Willard, he learned none of them had been contacted by Gary detectives in the six-plus weeks since the boy died. Dominguez gave the go-ahead for Lake County police to handle the investigation.

By then, the boy's mother and McKaskle had moved to South Bend, then later to Webster County, Neb., where she worked at Wal-Mart and he was arrested at least twice.

University of Chicago Hospitals Medical Director Dr. Jill Glick reported Austin had numerous injuries that remained untreated for a period of time. Willard was at work on Jan. 27 when Austin suffered the head injury, which she and McKaskle claimed happened when he fell down the stairs at the home they shared in Glen Park.

Austin's younger brother, Dominick, showed signs of 25 separate bruises and marks when his grandmother took him for an examination shortly after learning of Austin's condition. Dominick has been placed in her care while child welfare workers investigate whether his mother should regain custody.

Dominguez and Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter are expected to announce that McKaskle has been charged with neglect of a child resulting in death and knowingly or intentionally depriving a child of necessary support, according to a police official.

An arrest warrant will be issued for McKaskle, who is expected to be extradited soon to Lake County. Dominguez and Carter will discuss the charges at 11 a.m. today at the sheriff's department training room.

The felony charges filed last week against Kevin McKaskle in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son foiled the couple's plan to get him out of jail and out of town.

And not a minute too soon.

McKaskle's girlfriend had been stealing cash from her employer to post his $1,500 bond, police said Friday.

"They were on the run, for sure," Hastings police Sgt. Bill Mann said.

The warrant issued by Lake County on two Class A felony charges for neglect of a dependant causing death would have prevented McKaskle from leaving the jail, but Danielle Willard apparently didn't know that.

"She went to bail him out and now she's in jail," Mann said.

Willard, 24, was pocketing money from her register at the Hastings Super Walmart.

"They have very good surveillance there," Mann said.

Willard is charged with felony theft and has a $50,000 bond. McKaskle has charges in two Nebraska counties and faces extradition to Lake County on the neglect.

Facing serious criminal charges should be enough to keep Danielle from obtaining custody of Dominick, but Kathy wonders if her daughter will face legal repercussions for her sons' abuse.

She learned last week that Danielle may never be charged.

"They say they're having trouble getting a history of neglect on her," she said. "And I know it's not because they aren't trying. Detective Spurlock has done everything."

I have read plenty of "boods" at the university where I study things like the law and child abuse and juvenile justice.

What I learned there is that the average child abusers are young males that are inexperienced with children. They snap out under stress and kill children. They may not have had murderous intention (which is why so many of them get second degree murder charges or less) but they are still baby killers.

Of course Robert (is that the baby breaker's name) was nothing but good to his sister because she was able to communicate and control her impulses to scream for long periods of time. If she hadn't been able to do those things I think she would have seen a very different side to her beloved brother.

In addition, there has to be some evidence that events took place as the investigators claim or the judge or prosecutor would have dismissed the charges by now and bubby would be free to go home.

I think sis needs to read some more "boods" herself so that she might have a slim chance of finding a clue.

McKaskle pleaded guilty Thursday to neglect, a Class C felony punishable by a maximum eight-year sentence. The plea agreement spells out that his 28-month prison sentence is to be served concurrently to the sentence he is serving in a first-degree assault case in Nebraska.

In court records, McKaskle admitted he failed to adequately supervise the toddler while he was caring for him.

On Jan. 27, 2009, McKaskle was baby-sitting Austin and his younger brother, who was 2. McKaskle had been in the basement of the home at 4192 Monroe St., Gary, and left the door at the top of the stairs ajar when he came upstairs.

He then let the family dog out and it ran away. While chasing the dog, McKaskle left the two boys in the house. When he returned, he did not check on the children.

Some time later, McKaskle found Austin unresponsive at the bottom of the steps. The toddler was treated at Methodist Hospitals Northlake in Gary and transferred to University of Chicago Children's Hospital, where he died four days later.
