St. Paul police shot a suspect just before one in the afternoon Thursday, while responding to a burglary call in the city.
Early information from authorities indicates officers were responding to a call in the 900 block of Forest, between York and Sims.
They saw a "person they recognized," according to spokesman Tom Walsh.
The man came out of a house, approached the officer's squad car and began hitting it with a sword, according to Walsh.
Officers shot and wounded the suspect.
The suspect has been taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he's listed in critical condition.
