I swear to god, I was having a conversation with swivel a while back. We were discussing how the fall of the Soviet Union had really crimped the later generation's movies in regards to bad guys. No decent post-apocalyptic films like Mad Max\Road Warrior or Escape from New York. Without getting too far into that particular subject, I had mentioned we need another good movie like Road Warrior as I was itching to see some more mohawked madmen.
Little did I know.

Plot Summary:
In "Doomsday," a lethal virus spreads throughout a major country and kills hundreds of thousands. To contain the newly identified Reaper, the authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The literal walling-off works for three decades – until Reaper violently resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists, including Eden Sinclair (Ms. Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.
Neil Marshall, the director who brought us one of the best horror films of the last decade, 05's cave romp, The Descent, has delivered exactly what I wanted to see. If it is good or not is anyone's guess at this point, but the trailer is sweet.

All I know it has hot chicks, punks, a Malcolm Mcdowell, Bob Hoskins, explosions, guys wearing masks with chainsaws, hot chicks with face tattoos, swords, guns, duels to the death, motorcycls, car chases, exposions...sorry for the misspelling, my erection is obstructing my view.

I'm hoping this is just a good old fashioned romp through post-apocalyptic sillytown. Turn brain off, stuff face with popcorn, and have fun.

Definitely. Post apocalyptic flicks were huge in the 80's; one of my fondest movie going experiences as a kid was watching Road Warrior at the local drive-in.

Have any of you read "Lucifer's Hammer"?
Best Post-Apoc book of all time. Eerily realistic.

My main interests in this film,m aside from the fact that it's a post apocalyptic actioner, are Rhona Mitra and Neil Marshall. Reasons why:
A. Rhona Mitra is fucking hot!
B. Marshall is the same guy who brought us Dog Soldiers AND The Descent. That's a hell of a record of good films.
C. Rhona Mitra is fucking HOT!

Hell fucking yeah, I cant wait to see this. Its about fucking time another post apoc flick makes it.
Ironically, I just got done with shooting a post apocalyptic short, tentatively titled "The Last Dawn", and Im fucking with the transfers to get it edited. Tough to shoot, it was a brief, but hellacious experience.
Lucifer's Hammer, huh? Ill have to google it, but is it the nuke book? The one where the russian's launch tons of nukes down on America, and our country is a wasteland?

First time I saw the trailer I was all.... Mad Max!
I've got the original where Mel has his Aussie accent even though he's a bloody New Yorker!....Good stuff.

Really disappointed. May not have been so much so if it had come from a director who has not proven himself. But everything he could have done right, he just didn't and the only semi-cool parts were direct...I mean DIRECT...ripoffs of The Road Warrior.
Not even going to get into the TERRIBLE story and dialog, the unlikable heroin, and the completely silly Renaissance Festival setting. I am truly shocked that this came from the same person who did The Descent. The entire time I was sitting there, ass hurting, I couldn't WAIT to watch Road Warriors. Lastly, the soundtrack by Tyler Bates, a guy I actually like, was used to ill-effect in some key scenes.
The only things I liked about the film were SOME of the gore, and a little of The Road Warrior-ish car chase at the end which still couldn't hold a candle to the movie it was ripping off. That's it.
My rating? 4/10. Will not be buying this one.

I wanted to see the Hulk trailer on the big screen anyway... Kyle, Let's ride!
It did only make $1,650,000 on friday compared to Horton's $13,300,000!
Here's a post of someone who didn't mind it too much!
While this film is by no means meant for everyone, it fills a niche of a genre long awaiting an entry into the likes of Mad Max and Water World. I went into this film expecting something different and from what I saw in the previews, old school. I got just that and more. I could not stop smiling from start to finish as the camera took us to a world of anarchy and raw violence. The movie felt as whole as any and thanks to some simple narration at the beginning and fully developed sets and environments it felt real, and by that I don't mean realistic or feasible but just whole. Thats all I can say there... Rhona Mitra was hot and sexy and was perfectly cast. The action was raw and intense and while some cuts felt rushed I never felt like I was missing out. The camera was constantly doing creative things while never stretching itself to far. In a world of Bourne-like action movies, this is a refreshing entry in to the action movie genre. It will make you laugh from pure humor but also the nostalgic feeling of how classic the movie feels at times. This one isn't for everyone, like I said, but if you enjoyed Water World or others like it, you will love this movie. It makes me happy to see Hollywood spending money on these movies and giving them a chance again. Hands down my favorite of 2008 so far.(10,000 B.C. and Jumper can die...) P.S. Even if you don't want to see it, the Incredible Hulk trailer before the movie is worth the price of admission!!

When they finish the CGI work on Hulk, I'll get excited about seeing the trailer on the big screen. For now, I can deal with the online version.

Marshall has underwhelmed me with his last two films. This looks like more of the same only more of a direct ripoff of other films (escape from new york & the road warrior) than what Dog Soldiers and The Descent were.

That reviewer put Mad Max and that aqua-failure in the same sentence?

I do not agree with that quoted review at all, in fact, I disagree with almost every statement made. I cannot believe that they sat there with a smile on there face from start to finish. I acutally had a few people, like me, groan at certain spots.
One of the biggest WTF moments comes from the fact that the main character has a fake eye. It is also a wireless camera. When she needs to, she pops her eye out, rolls it across the floor where it will stop and perfectly frame whatever action she needs to see. Not only that, she controls it with a watch-device, able to make it rotate on it's base. I am all for gadgets and what-not, I can even suspend disbelief with some of them...but that one REALLY got to me. How in the fuck do you make a perfectly round eyeball ROTATE on it's base after you just ROLLED it?
I know, it sounds petty, and it kinda is, but it was just a sign of all the dumbass things to come. Hell, even Escape from New York is more realistic than this film, as was The Road Warrior. Just because this film attempted to copy them, does not mean I am going to praise it when it fucked everything up. The entire time I was sitting there...right about the time that the main bad guy took the stage to entertain his "audience", I was wishing I had seen the Bank Job instead.
The Hulk trailer? Sucked. Sorry, but it did. With Batman clips and Iron Man trailers giving men everywhere erections, the Hulk trailer was just....boring. I was not happy with the CGI, either. It looked just like a video game.

Well, I watched this last night...
Mild Spoilers ahead!
Meh. I defintely see why Morbid hated it. It's very uneven and there was a lot of wasted potential. The movie drags, except when there is an action scene and those happen about every 20 minutes. There is one scene, where they introduce the main villain and it's done so half-assed. It had huge potential to be over the top and terrifying, gritty even. And, they end up introducing him like an 80's hair metal band lead singer. There are cabaret dancers and shit everywhere. Hell, there's even guys in weird S&M gimp suits dancing around. WTF?
Then, after they escape these idiots... they go into the woods and a medieval society, run by Malcolm McDowell. What is this, Timeline or something?
Aside from other things that are clearly wrong with it, there is far worse out there. I think there is some stuff that works really well in the film (the action, for the most part, is shot well and fun to watch; other odd tidbits in the film are decent) but it's just weighed down with wasted opportunities, to the point where it makes you wonder what Doomsday could have been.
2, maybe 2.5/5

Personally, I have been completely underwhelmed by both of Marshall's other films. The Decent really left me completely tapped as to interest in anything that he would be producing in the future. The preview to this looked DTV all the way, but now that I know that he did this....No thanks. This guy has good ideas that just become bland rip off of other things I have seen a million times. Do I need another Mad Max film? Nope.
