Now, police say 50-year-old David Lynn Boyce is facing up to life in prison on felony charges in connection with the incident.
Boyce was arraigned this afternoon in 37th District Court by Judge John Chmura on one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of intent to commit great bodily harm, police said.
"We're thankful and grateful the victim didn't die. It was really close to his carotid artery," Warren Police Lt. Michael Torey said. "It was a lucky situation. It could have been a lot worse. He could have died at the scene."
Police say the verbal argument turned physical at Boyce's home in the 23900 block of Dequindre when his son punched his father in the face, breaking his nose. In retaliation, police say Boyce went to his garage, retrieved a knife and stabbed his son in the left side of the neck.
Boyce's son, who police have declined to identify, suffered a two-inch gash and was transported to St. John Hospital in Macomb for stitches. He was later released.
The felony charge of assault with intent to murder carries a penalty of up to life in prison. The other is a 10-year offense, police said.
Police say alcohol may have contributed to the incident.
Chmura set a $100,000 cash surety bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for May 19.
