GASTONIA, N.C. -- A Gastonia baby-sitter accused of putting a 3-month-old boy in a vegetative state simply hung his head as a judge increased his bond by 600 percent.

Ryan Bratton, 20, made his first appearance on first-degree child abuse charges Friday afternoon. Police said he lived with the victim's mother and baby-sat the infant and his 3-year-old sibling while she worked.

Officers said they received a heartbreaking call Tuesday from the apartment the couple shared on Barkley Street in Gastonia. During the call Bratton can be heard telling operators that the boy didn't appear to be breathing.

Ohhh Whoopty fucking Doo, a whole seven to nine years in prison for leaving a 3 month old a damn vegetable for its WHOLE LIFE!!! Another fucked up state with fucked up child abuse laws,

Doctors have offered little hope for 16-month-old Semajj Lewis.

He is legally blind and has remained in a vegetative state since suffering a brain hemorrhage in February 2008. But the child's mother, Shavonna Jackson of Gastonia, still hopes for the best.

"He knows my voice. He knows when I'm there," she said. "I hope ... I know he's gonna get better."

On Wednesday, a Gaston County jury convicted a man for putting Samajj Lewis in that condition. Ryan Jerel Bratton, 21, of the 800 block of Barkley St., Gastonia, was found guilty of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury for hitting the 3-month-old infant on the head while baby-sitting him last year.

Superior Court Judge Richard Boner sentenced Bratton to between seven and nine years in prison following the three-day trial. The jury deliberated for about two hours before finding him guilty.

The jury also found an aggravating factor in that Bratton inflicted the abuse on a child so young.

Bratton was baby-sitting the infant in February 2008 while Jackson was at work. Bratton was dating Jackson at the time, but is not the child's father.

Bratton made a frantic 911 call that night and reported he had been feeding the baby when the child began to vomit and then stopped breathing.

"He was panting real hard and couldn't breathe," Bratton said to the dispatcher that night. "I put him on my shoulder, patted him on the back to try and get some air out of him and he just went limp like a dead dog."

When the dispatcher began to give Bratton instructions for delivering CPR, he said ‘Man, this is too much for me.' Then he began to cry.

The baby suffered a brain hemorrhage and was first taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital, then to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Police soon charged Bratton with hitting the child, after which he gave a written and videotaped confession, before later pleading not guilty.

Bratton's initial trial last week resulted in a hung jury, with the votes 10-2 in favor of a guilty verdict.

During this week' trial, prosecutor Bill Stetzer pointed to Bratton's own admission of guilt, when he said he had become frustrated with the baby for crying all the time.

Bratton testified in his own defense this week, and said he had confessed earlier because he felt he had to take the blame.

But medical evidence presented at the trial showed that the infant's head trauma was inflicted within 24 hours of Bratton reporting it. Prosecutors said that proved he was the only person who could have been responsible.

Bratton's defense attorney, Calvin Hamrick, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Semajj Lewis is now being cared for at Holy Angels, a Belmont facility that caters to children and adults with mental retardation and physical disabilities. Jackson, who also has a 4-year-old daughter, said he is receiving good care there.

"I get to come up any time I want to," she said.

Semajj eats through a feeding tube. A doctor testified during this week's trial that the infant will never recover from the injuries that caused his brain to swell, resulting in tissue damage.

Jackson sees the bright side, however.

"He's doing better than he was - a whole lot better," she said. "He still ain't going to be able to walk or talk or do anything like that as of now.

"They say he's going to be a vegetable all his life, but I'm praying he'll pull up out of it a little bit."

Jackson said she is happy with Wednesday's ruling against Bratton.

"I'm glad it got resolved," she said. "He got what he deserved."

Wow, and this guy is still alive?? Got to tell ya, I don't think I could have left him alone, I would have at the least maimed him for life. I would have loved beating the guy until permanent brain damage was evident and a fucked up arm and leg that would have left him useless for life, oh, can't forget the need to use a feeding tube to get his nutrition, nope can't forget that one.... yeah, sounds almost right. Better yet, he should just fuckn' die in prison after a severe beating...live for 16 months then die in a vegetative state. Yeah, now that sounds better, though I'd still like to beat the bastard.

He forgot to mention the baby started vomiting and had trouble breathing AFTER he beat the baby. Yeah, that tid bit of info would have been useful to the dispatcher. Real big of you to decide to take the blame, big man, real thoughtful of you...fucker. Cry, baby beater, cry because pay back is coming and I'm sure your cell mates aren't going to like your blubbering...nope, just off yourself, that is another ticket that would be acceptable, after I beat your baby beating ass.

I know the mother is grieving for the loss of a once perfect baby...I get that, but she really should be pissed that he only got 7 years. He did NOT get what he deserved, not by a long shot.

"He knows my voice. He knows when I'm there," she said. "I hope ... I know he's gonna get better."
...I hope so, I really do, my prayers are with Semajj and mama, that they both heal completely.

Hey guys im new but, i am requesting that this be taken down. i completely agree with everything you guys have been saying, but my name is also ryan bratton, and if my name is google searched the third result that comes up is: "Ryan Bratton Likes Popping Babies On the Back of the Head" and i dont want potential employers and college admissions to see that and get the wrong idea. i see the thread was created in 2007, making it obsolete in my opinion. I completely understand if you wish to keep it up, and do not think that i believe that this other ryan bratton was not bad, i just want to keep my "digital footprint" clean.
Thank you,
OTHER Ryan Bratton

Employers and colleges will have your SSN and birth date and will know it is not you.

This needs to be left up, so if a woman wants to hook up with the ASSHOLE Ryan Bratton, and googles his name.... they see this.

I have the same name as a lunatic doctor who had her medical license revoked. It's just par for the course if your first and last names aren't uncommon. I've never been mistaken for anyone, even though howmanyofme.com says there are more than 20,000 people in the US with my first and last name combination!

At least with common names you can generally persuade people that it is just a coincidence. My last name is very uncommon, in fact only two families use it, and one of my aunts is unfortunate enough to share first names with the black sheep of the other family. When she and my uncle split up and she moved to live on her own she had debt-collectors knocking down her door within a fortnight thinking she was the other XXX YYY that had given them the slip earlier. That was pretty hairy.

A while back a woman with the same name as mine robbed a bank and shot a guard. My phone blew up with people calling wanting to know what the hell was up. Took months AND a notice in the paper to get them off my back. Major aggravation then, but a source of humor now. I have a lot of sympathy for you...after all, I was just a guard-shooting bank robber, not a baby beater/killer. you just have to tough it out and keep your cool; a short "same name, different person and it really sucks to be me right now." That's all you can do for now.

THis is why in Latin America they keep your mother's last name and your father's.

An example would be:

Andrea Campos Rivera.

Name:Andrea
Last Name: Campos Rivera
Campos is the paternal last name (which they keep in English speaking countries) and Rivera is the maternal last name.

I live in Canada and it's so hard to make people USE my maternal last name OR to think that my paternal last name is my middle name. I don't have a middle name either.

Thanks guys for the replies, and I now understand that this should be left up. I personally just dislike seeing RYAN BRATTON LIKES POPPING BABIES ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD every time i search my name, I am doing a Digital Footprint Assignment for my 9th grade english class and I am required to try to fix anything I can about my Digital Footprint. My final request is that the article's name be changed to something less aggressive such as: Man Accused Of Abusing Gastonia Infant or something like that. I understand if this is not possible to do or if this is not acceptable to do.

Thanks Again,
OTHER Ryan Bratton

Whoa. You're in 9th grade?! And you write this coherently!? OMG, YOU GUYS, THERE IS HOPE FOR US AFTER ALL! woohooo.

Ok. As for the title... I am not a mod here, but I have posted a couple threads. When one submits an article, they ask that you put the alleged abuser's name in the title, that way the thread is found easier when that person's name is googled. (Hence it showing up for you so easily.)

He's lying. He's not in 9th grade. Or wait... could schools actually be teaching?
Nah, he's got to be lying.

Well shit. I was going to make a "Little Bunny Foo Foo" joke, but reading the story first killed it for me. That poor baby.

Other Ryan Bratton... I feel your pain. My maiden name is so common that there are over 200 people in the US with that exact name. One of them is a porn star. (My sister has a common name as well, and strangely enough, there is also a porn star with her name.) People looking for my maiden name get a zillion people who are not me. Also, porn. Lots of porn. Future employers should understand that more than one person can have a name. You are obviously not old enough, nor incarcerated enough, to be the scumbag mentioned in this thread.

Unfortunately, there is only one of me. Many others with a different spelling, but one of me.
ETA: What the hell did I just say? HA! Fortunately for the WORLD there's only one of me.

Perhaps the title could be changed to include the abuser's age? Like "Ryan Bratton, 23, likes popping..."
Just a suggestion
I feel for ya, 'other Ryan'- Good Luck!
