State Police Senior Trooper Jason Celapino testified that Wasco, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and a blue bandana, went into Maverick's on Grafton Road on April 22 -- during daylight hours -- and grabbed a purse sitting between a mother and daughter playing video gaming machines.
The women chased Wasco outside and a struggle for the purse ensued, Celapino said. Celapino said Wasco told the women to "give me the purse or I'll stab you." One of the women told Wasco to go ahead and stab her, lying that she has AIDS.
Wasco pulled out a small knife and stabbed at the women, delivering a small puncture wound to one of the women's arms and small cuts to both women, Celapino said. He managed to regain control of the purse and run off.
Troopers combed through surveillance video during their investigation and caught an image of Wasco exiting a red vehicle outside Maverick's, Celapino said. From that, they got a lead.
A woman called and said that was her car on the news. She and another man said Wasco was the man they were looking for, Celapino said.
Upon questioning, Wasco admitted that he stole the purse, Celapino said.
Wasco's attorney, Michael Sharley, argued that Wasco didn't commit first-degree robbery since he didn't display a weapon or use force when he stole the purse, but Nabors said the entire incident amounted to armed robbery.
Sharley also asked Nabors to reduce Wasco's $200,000 bond, but Nabors refused, saying that Wasco will likely re-offend. He was out on bond on an embezzlement charge at the time of the robbery, prosecutors said.
The man and woman who called police about the car are under investigation in connection with the robbery, DeChristopher said.
