Self-proclaimed "good mom" charged with child abuse, DUI in Martin County
HOBE SOUND — A Stuart woman arrested Thursday maintained she was still “a good mom” despite accusations against her of driving under the influence with her children in a van and leaving the scene of a crash, according to an arrest affidavit.
Melissa Dawn Serafica, 31, has been charged with child abuse, driving under the influence with property damage, refusing a breathalyzer test, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and driving with a suspended license.
The affidavit says Serafica, who was driving with her children ages 4 and 8, crashed her mini-van into a fence on Southeast Hobe Ridge Road around 8 p.m.
The crash punctured the van’s cooling system, the affidavit says, and deputies followed a trail of coolant leading from crash scene to a park on Sandy Lane where Serafica and her children were sitting in the damaged vehicle.
Serafica smelled of alcohol and was was unresponsive to questions asked by deputies, the affidavit says. After seeing damage to the van that corresponded with evidence found near the scene of the crash, she was placed under arrest.
On the way to the Martin County Jail, Serafica told deputies she had some wine at a friend’s house earlier and had a “mom breakdown”and hit something after her children began fighting, according to the affidavit.
Her children were turned over to a family member at the time of her arrest, the affidavit says.
