Responding to a 911 call, police found Keyaun James not breathing at an Olathe home in the 16600 block of West 123rd Street Tuesday. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to his death, the child had been in both Olathe and Kansas City in the care of a 22-year-old man (boyfriend) and a 17-year-old(boyfriend's brother).

When the 2 year old became unresponsive, the mother loaded him into the car and took him to a relatives house in Olathe. Someone at that house called 911.

Relatives said Keyaun's parents were together until a few months ago.

Keyaun's grandmother, Tanna Barnett, is a licensed day care provider. She said that if Keyaun had been with her, things would be different right now.

She saw him after he died, and her response to KMBC was
"I actually think someone done something to him,". "He had a lot of bruises and a head injury in the back of his head. His jaw was swollen. He had scratches all over his face."

Barnett's son is Keyaun's father.

"He's not doing well at all," Barnett said of her son. "It just hurts. (Keyaun) was a happy little baby, playful -- everybody loved him. He's going to be truly missed."

Keyaun's little sister is staying with another relative.

Cause of death: Blunt force trauma.

Police still have no suspect in custody in the death this week of a 2-year-old boy who died from blunt force trauma.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death of Keyaun James a homicide. Police were called to a home in Olathe on Tuesday and found the boy unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Before being taken to Olathe, the boy had been in Kansas City and reportedly in the care of a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old teen, investigators have said.

Kansas City police have interviewed those who were watching Keyaun and have turned the case over to the Jackson County prosecutor’s office, a police spokesman said.

A Kansas City, Missouri, man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for causing the death of a young boy, but the child's relatives say that the sentence doesn't even begin to fit the crime, leading to fireworks outside the courtroom on Wednesday.

Shawrice Winton was convicted of manslaughter in the February, 2008, beating death of 2-year-old Keyaun James in a south Kansas City home. Winton was originally charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter as part of a deal with prosecutors.

But Keyaun's relatives say that the 15 year sentence is not what they wanted.

"The death penalty," said Tanna Barnett. "He admitted to everything, kicking him, hitting him, beating him and everything. He admitted to everything. Punching him. That's a little baby. At the time the baby was sick. Little Keyaun was sick."

Prosecutors say that 15 years is the maximum penalty for the manslaughter conviction, but the victim's family says that Winton could be eligible for parole after only five years, and because Winton has already spent nearly two years behind bars, they fear that he could be back on the streets in as few as three years.

"We've got to go to the cemetery to celebrate his birthday and Christmas," said Persa Brownlee, Keyaun's grandmother. "Where is the justice? If they sell crack cocaine, they get 25 years to life. He done killed a little 2-year-old innocent baby and he could walk in five years. Where is the justice in that?"

Keyaun's relatives and Winton's family confronted each other outside the courthouse, where the child's family says that threats were made against Keyaun's surviving 3-year-old sister.

Sounds like someone needs to get involved here to ensure the safety of Keyaun's surviving 3-year-old sister. Please do something before we have another dead baby in that home. CPS REALLY needs to get her to a safe place.

Keyaun James was killed for being a baby who was sick and probably miserable.

He admitted to everything, kicking him, hitting him, beating him and everything. He admitted to everything. Punching him. That's a little baby. At the time the baby was sick. 15 years is nothing for the misery this child went through. No dignity or justice in that sentence. It's a joke. Until children are seen as legal entities with undeniable rights and treated as such, this will continue to happen. The law must change the way they look at children. Its a travesty and disgrace.

I am seriously hoping this bastard, Shawrice Winton is killed in prison before he see's the light of day again.

15 years? That's a miscarriage of justice if ever there was one.

OMG, horrifying. what the poor baby boy do ever to get such severe punishmen as that?? And 5 years for this asswipe. I agree with the family and he needs way more harsher punishment, no doubt about it.

And now a threat aginst the sibling? Sick family members right there.
RIP baby boy.
