Juan Mendez kidnaps 3-year-old niece, tells family to watch news

PASSAIC, N.J. -- The body of a 3-year-old girl has been found in a northern New Jersey river, just hours after police say her uncle left with her and told family members "to watch the 6 o'clock news tonight".

Passaic police spokesman Andy White says Janiay Rievas was found around 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Passaic River.

Authorities are still searching for 21-year-old Juan Mendez, whose abandoned car was found on a bridge over the river. Mendez had been living with family members in Passaic.

Police say he left with the girl at around 6 a.m. White says family members told police Mendez "left in a rage and said to watch the 6 o'clock news tonight."

The abandoned car is on the bridge; officials are searching the water

Mendez's car was found on the Gregory Street bridge over the Passaic River, about 1,000 feet from where his niece's body was found, authorities said. The doors of the gray Honda were open, but Mendez had disappeared.

Police said it was unclear whether Mendez had fled on foot or jumped into the river.

"For the past week he has been on some type of drug binge," White said. "He's been on crack all week."

Family members and friends said Mendez was a Fed-Ex employee who had been living in a house on Scher Place in Passaic, with his sister, Eileen Mendez, her 3-year-old daughter and the child's grandmother, Eileen Camejo.

Police blocked off a large perimeter around the two-story residence this morning. The beige house with brown shingles is owned by Eileen Camejo's boyfriend, Jim Combs.

Combs said Mendez been acting "strangely" recently, but was never violent.

"He seemed normal. He hung out with his friends, watched TV and played video games," Combs said.

Mendez told family members he was going to get something to eat this morning, grabbed his niece and drove off in a relative's car, police said.

I never did find a better picture of baby Janiya. She deserved a chance at life. This pictures just breaks my heart as she was smiling, all hopeful and unaware that death would steal her life away. I am glad her murder found death too.
