Two people were arrested after disciplinary action taken against a 13-year-old boy left the boy unconscious and in need of hospital care, police reported.
Marie Y. Charles, 44, of Haines City, is charged with aggravated child abuse, domestic violence battery and tampering with evidence in connection with the beating of her 13-year-old son.
According to a Haines City Police Department news release, officers responded around 4:37 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of aggravated child abuse at a residence in the 1900 block of Baker Avenue.
The investigation revealed that a 13-year-old boy was disrespectful to his mother, who was trying to discipline the boy for missing school.
According to the release, Marie Y. Charles, 44, contacted another son, the stepbrother of the unnamed 13-year-old, to help administer the discipline. Police reported that Charles held down the 13-year-old while the stepbrother, identified as Triner Noel, 24, of Villas Del Lago Drive in Winter Haven, punched the boy and hit him with a piece of hard rubber weather stripping until the victim lost consciousness.
The victim was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where today he was listed in fair condition.
Charles was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse, domestic violence battery and tampering with evidence. Noel was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and domestic violence battery.
Charles and Noel were booked into Polk County Jail without bond and were still in the jail Friday.
