A former transient Friday was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for inflicting 98 stab wounds on a San Clemente man who allowed the defendant move in, but asked him to leave when the victim discovered his fishing poles had been stolen.

Salvador Chavo Marquez, 28, was convicted March 2 of fatally stabbing 62-year-old Stephen Clark with two knives, both of which broke from the force of the attack, Farrah Emami of the Orange County District Attorney's Office said.

Marquez also stabbed Clark's poodle-mix dog, Charlie, 60 times with the same knives, Emami said.

Clark's teeth broke when his face was stomped on, and a piece of the broken knife was found lodged in his neck, Emami said. The victim's hand was reaching out, touching his dog, she added.

Marquez was sentenced by Orange County Superior Court Judge William Froeberg for first-degree murder, animal abuse and unlawful taking of a vehicle, as well as the special circumstance allegations of murder during a burglary and murder with torture.

Marquez met Clark while installing a television satellite dish at the victim's home. Over the next two years, Clark often allowed Marquez to stay at his home because the defendant had no permanent place to live.

About 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2006, Marquez entered Clark's home through an unlocked door, Emami said. When confronted by the victim, Marquez killed the man and his dog, before ransacking the house.

He loaded Clark's pickup truck and fled, she said, adding that the truck was crammed so full of Clark's property that the shell door could not be closed.

When Marquez got back to his motel room, his roommates noticed blood on his shoes and clothes. Marquez said he'd been in a fight, but added, "Don't worry, the guy's not amongst the living any more," Emami said.

He offered one roommate $100 to help him take the truck to Los Angeles, but they never made it. About midnight on Aug. 6, the truck ran out of gas near Oso Parkway on Interstate 5, and both men, who were intoxicated, fell asleep, Emami said.

About 1 a.m., a California Highway Patrol officer stopped to check the truck and arrested Marquez for DUI. Marquez told the officer that the blood on his clothes and shoes was from fish, Emami said.

About 9 a.m. that same morning, a neighbor noticed that Clark's garage door was open and his truck was gone. Clark and his dog were then found dead by the neighbor and Clark's stepfather.

Police linked Clark's stolen truck to Marquez, and the knife handle to the blade that broke off in the victim's neck was found in the vehicle. The blood on the clothes matched Clark's DNA, and a bloody shoe print on the victim's face matched Marquez's shoe, Emami said.

Clark, a father of three, owned a chimney sweep business and was in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time of his death, Amormino said.
