I have no doubt that the almighty Swivel will bemoan my decision to buy a HD-DVD drive, especially knowing what we all know now.
Microsoft, in an obvious decision, decided to drop the XBOX360 HD-DVD add on drive to $50.00 today. It comes with King Kong on HD-DVD. You can also get five free HD-DVDs via rebate. For fifty bucks, an HD option and 6 HD-DVDs sound like a good deal.
I went ahead and ordered one from Best Buy. Waiting on my order confirmation so I can go pick it up.

Nah, Sounds like a fair deal to me... six flicks you will be able to enjoy for a long while for under 10 bucks a pop and a nice drive to play high def rentals if you dont have a blu ray player just yet.
Heck you migth stumble into more discs at a price worth buying on walking dead media, now you have a drive to play em.
Anyway I have the theory one will be able to rip hds and burn em as blu rays with no real degradation in a few years anyway. If I catch a cheap pc drive Im gonna buy me one.

The order wasn't ready when I got there so I ended up getting $10.00 back. I used it to pick up 12 Monkeys on HD-DVD. I have to say that both 12 Monkeys and King Kong are absolutely beautiful in HD.
So, all in all, I'll have gotten the HD-DVD drive, and 7 films for about $56.00. I can't complain about that.
BTW Dop, look around the net. You can use the HD-DVD drive on a PC. I was under the assumption it was easy to do but a cursory glance on google makes me think I was wrong.

I would do the same. If they're going to give them away, what the hell! sounds like a good buy! :D

Sounds like a good purchase to me. I don't think they'll have any problem clearing stock at that price. And the remaining discs should be going at a good price before long.
I would be stalking eBay for the next few months. Some people out there have massive collections of films, and might be feeling suicidal.
Look, you couldn't go see two films for that price, and you will probably get 10 or so viewings out of those discs just this year. I have to laugh, though, at the HD-DVD fans in the forums who are complaining that Blu-Ray won. Their argument goes like this:
"You can get a Toshiba A3 for $99! You can get the 360 add-on for $50! The movies are cheaper! The more expensive technology won!"
These dolts think that the current pricing is natural, and not warehouse-clearing. If HD-DVD had won, the prices would be the other way around.

Well, it looks like I bought at the right time. Amazon has marked down their HD-DVD stock by 50% today. I'll be picking up a crap load of HD-DVDs in the next few weeks.
My only problem is what happens when my 360 and or HD-DVD drive break in the future. It'll be like trying to find a betamax player now. I'm going to try not to throw down too much cash into this dying media but some films such as Fear And Loathing are ones that I'll have to buy.

I think you'll always be able to find a used player. For a price.
You should probably set a limit for yourself. Collecting shit on the cheap can be so addictive that it doesn't end up being cheap.
