Lisa Schuchard, 25, is being charged with child abuse for teaching her daughter, 4, how to smoke marijuana. According to the police, the daughter showed them how to smoke pot from a joint, a bong and a pipe.

Not only did the four year daughter learn how to smoke marijuana, but her and her younger brother, 2, were described in a complaint to Child Protective Services as dirty and living in a filthy home that had drug paraphernalia around.

This is the response from MPP.

Hi Kathy,

Thank you for contacting us. MPP does not encourage the illegal use of marijuana by anyone, especially minors. We believe that marijuana should be taxed and regulated like alcohol to adults over the age of 21. In fact, one of the many benefits of taxing and regulating marijuana is that it would be harder for minors to obtain it.

Again, thank you for contacting us, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions!

Take care,
~Sara Cannon

Totally ignored the story at hand.

I could understand offering the pot to a high school or even middle school student who might otherwise be exposed to it. But a 4 year old? this is insane. Way too young to consent or make a rational decision.

gprime, middle school? You're just saying that to be inflammatory, right?
Growing kids' lungs do not need the smoke. I'm all for marijuana legalization. But age limits are appropriate - 18 or 21 is fine with me. Offering alcohol or drugs to a high school student is unsafe and, at the moment, still illegal. To a middle school student, well, that's just bad parenting.

I will say, though, that my dad let me puff on his tobacco pipe once when i was very small, and I smoke very rarely to this day.

No, I mean what I said. By the time they reach high school, I would see no issue at all. I suggest middle school as a possibility mostly meaning towards the end of 8th grade, in small quantities, if those progressive parents were already so inclined as to expose their kids to it. Now, I'm not advocating that, but rather suggesting that I could see the logic behind it and the validity. Totally different ballpark from a four year old.

gprime, I think your Libertarian bent is failing to protect the liberties of the victim, here.

Your lungs shouldn't be exposed to smoke until age 18, at minimum. A study on smog was published by the LA Times a few years ago and the medical research showed that a female's lungs are fully formed at the age of 18, and a male's NEARLY SO. Exposure, just to smog, caused permanent damage in kids exposed to it before their lungs were fully-formed.

So, you are saying that a parent should be able to permanently damage a child, who does not yet know better, just to protect the liberty of the asshole parent. To me, this is no different than TXChris arguing that the rapist has the right to continue fucking the victim in the alley. I appreciate the idea of defending liberties, but we when two freedoms collide, we have a responsibility to perform a deep analysis of the situation to be absolutely sure we are not protecting the criminal, and ignoring the victim.

I think I understand what you're saying - not that it's a *great* idea, but that you can understand the idea. Right, kind of?

I just still have a problem with it. Teenagers do stupid shit because their cerebral cortexes aren't fully developed until they're in their twenties. Parents don't have that excuse providing they're over 25 themselves. So to me, setting age limits is appropriate protection for kids who cannot make fully rational decisions.

Exactly. While I'm not a big fan of legally imposed age restrictions, I do think that that parents ought to be responsible and set fair rules for their kids. That would include not smoking pot in middle school or high school. I mean, I can understand the motivation behind most outrageous things, but I sure as hell don't agree with it.

An Omaha woman accused of teaching her 4-year-old daughter how to smoke pot has pleaded no contest to a lesser charge.

Lisa Schuchard, who was originally charged with felony child abuse, pleaded no contest on Monday to a reduced charge of negligent child abuse.

The boyfriend recently pleaded guilty to four misdemeanors.
