View Full Version : Book Club? Movie Club? Huh?

We attempted this on the old board a couple years back, and with Deborah LeBlancs help we almost did it...I think. But is there any interest in a book club of any type? Do a book of the month, or a book of the months type thing? Also, any interest in attempting anything similar with music or even movies?
Give me some feedback if you don't mind. We always get seemingly willing people but then when it all starts, everyone disappears. :)
Only reason why I am asking is because I would like to go ahead and start setting up any additional forums for this and start fleshing out the details now rather than later.

I'd be down for a music one for people who enjoy heavy metal.

Noted.
How would you imagine it working? I always thought it would be cool to kinda coincide with the Artist of the Day type posts. But rather, get a group of people who listen to full CD's, even if it is music you normally do not listen to, and then discuss what you thought of it. Something like that, I dunno. I figured music would be easier as unlike books, you can get through a CD fairly quickly.

I'd be happy to participate/be a member in/of a book club! :D Just ask if you wish for me to elaborate...

Elaborate, please. :)
We tried this before. A book would be recommended, everyone was given a chance to obtain the book, a cut-off was set to finish the book but discussions would be open during the reading.
The way I was figuring (and again, I am asking for suggestions, so none of this was fleshed out) was once a book was settled on, the chapters were divided with a guidelines on when they should be finished. A Category is created for said book with each of the chapters as forums to be discussed. That way, no spoilers would be given to readers who may not have got that far. Anyway, I am almost out of here and I am rambling a bit...

Hmmm. That'd be neat...however everyone reading one book might get tiresome/annoying...but sure, let it be. I was thinking along the lines of partnering up with someone and reading the same book and then discussing it. When the two people finish the book, two other pairs begin to read it...thus 'creating a 'swingers' motion with books...
AB-bookC + DE-bookF > AB-bookF + DE-bookC
But...maybe I'm complicating it....

Maybe you are, maybe you aren't. We thought it was as simple as could be when we tried it last time and it fell apart. But I don't think that it had anything to do with no one understanding what to do, but rather the same thing that happens in a lot of these scenarios...everyone gets all excited talking about it, but once it starts..*crickets*. :)
I just thought we could keep it simple. Members who feel like participating rotate picking a book. Keep the subject lite and entertaining (and cheap for those who may not have the book). Everyone read the book and discuss. The reason why I was going to divvy the book into chapters is that some people can breeze through books fairly quickly while others, for a myriad of reasons, cannot. Having the book divided would give everyone a chance to talk about certain portions of the book without worrying about spoilers and such.
Again, just throwing stuff out there as well.

Complicating things is what you do best! ;)

That sounds like a good idea. I would be up for a book club or a movie club. I actually think the movie one would be easy to do and very interesting.

The movie one is fairly simple and done on other sites to varying degrees of success, mostly relying on participation. You can easily choose a movie on TV, or everyone get access to the same movie and watch at the same time. We can either use the chat while watching, or for less distraction use a thread...or just use both. The hard part is just picking the movie and settling on a time. This is also done for some television shows as well.
We could always just jump in the deep end on any of these and just see how it goes. Tweak as we go.

A book is a set of written, printed, or blank pages fastened along one side and encased between protective covers.;)

I still talk to her occasionally. She has already completed her fourth book. She stays pretty damn busy.

Ohh, Ok! I think I saw one in a movie once! Thanks apocalypticdreamer!
If you do a book of the month club you should start with this...
Don't Hassel the Hoff: The Autobiography (Hardcover)
by David Hasselhoff (Author) ;)

I put up an example forum on how "Clubs" could work. Specifically the Book Club. Using To Kill A Mockingbird as an example only, the chapters divvied and Stickied up top, General discussion at bottom. We could even attach a poll if we wanted.
I copied this format from another book forum that actually does have about 30 active people participating at any given time. It seems fairly simple and not confusing in any way and has a myriad different ways of getting discussions started.
The only problem will come strictly from member participation, which is always a tough one. I mean, BD has thousands of members but can only seem to get 20 to vote on some of the draft match-ups.
I'll wait to see what you guys think, and even if we have to move ahead with 3 people participating, so what. Spread the word. Even if they don't like the rest of the site or its contents, they could still participate in that portion.
We could probably get some author participation depending on what level of starvation the author may currently be at. :)

I could participate in the movie club for sure. Most likely a music club as well. As for the book club though... I think it's a cool idea but I have stacks of books that I really want to read. Being that I like to spend a lot of my free time on the net, playing video games, watching movies and reading; It takes me weeks to finish a book most of the time. I'm not sure I want to by pass reading the books already on my shelves for books that someone else selects.

The Movie and Music Clubs could be done in a similar fashion. Especially if done by the month (or week if people are going to pitch in and help with keeping the threads and stuff organized).
The chosen movie could also have a watch thread or chat session in which everyone attempts to watch it at the same time.
The reason why I like the month time frame is that it gives people more than enought time to acquire the movie\CD that is to be used and gives you enough time to "absorb" it. But again, that's why this thread is here, to get some ideas going.
How would music be handled? Artist catalog? Specific CD? If so, what time frame should they be rotated? This also applies to Movies as well. How long should the rotation be?
If done in more intervals than once a month, it would be a lot easier for me if we said every other Sunday or something to that effect. This will also allow us to pick out all the books, CD's and movies for the entire year and have forums set up accordingly.
Once the year (or month) is done, I can just archive them and we start again.

Shouldn't matter. We just need to find a way to chunk it up so that people can discuss while reading without worrying about having anything spoiled. A book without chapters could have threads that are titled "Page 1-50" or something like that. THink that would work?

I enjoy the book club...I just haven't had time to, now that I'm on-call all the time; to actually commit to Play Dead for a decent amount of time. I should still be able to finish it though and discuss...
I think we should go in 'genre intervals' for the movie club, and pick a select night to watch a film, so when it ends we can all actively discuss it. Watching a movie and then discussing it is easier than reading a book and then discussing it because people read a various rates...and films have an allotted time.
Genre intervals...basically on the first week, watch a comedy, on the second, watch a drama, on the third watch an action, on the fourth watch a horror, on the fifth watch a romance, on the sixth watch a western, on the seventh watch a thriller, on the eighth watch a documentary...and so forth.

That all sounds good to me. Any ideas on how you envision the forum capacitating it? I would like to keep it under the same category as the Book Club forum, but because of the more frequent intervals (weekly), I would imagine something like this:
Dreamin' Demon Groups (http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29)
Book of the Month
(Subforums) June, July, etc.
Movie of the Week
But not have subforums, simply list the movies inside the Movie of the Week forum.

Yes...no subforums. Just a Movie of the Week section would suffice, it would stop clutter and save bandwidth.
Another idea, instead of having fixed weeks for film genres, we can have a poll after everyone's seen the movie for that week on what genre to watch the following week?

Sure. But remember that with our current crowd, it may lean towards horror. Not that I am against that of course, just sayin'. Would you also want to try and use the chat room for live chat during viewings for people who attempt to watch at the same time? You know, how the other sites do...set a movie and a time...start it up and go?

Unless you want to try and set the movies up a month at a time. Give people enough time to track down the films. We could create a monthly poll for Horror, Action, Comedy, etc. once 4 (or 5) movies are picked (one from each genre) we have that month ready to go. Just brainstorming,

Deal. Maybe once a year, or during holidays; we can have the movie be one currently in theatres. Just for occassions.
