It seems strange to me that you would shoot someone and not report it if you were the victim of a crime. I wonder if they will file any charges for not reporting it.

Investigators have unraveled a long-unsolved shooting death, but police said no charges have been filed against the man who admitted killing a machete-wielding robbery suspect nearly three years ago.

The dead 29-year-old suspect, whose name was not released this week, attacked another man with the machete after robbing the man's friend in the 6400 block of Sherman on Sept. 24, 2006, police said.

Police said the man, whose name also has not been released, shot the suspect several times. The shooter was 17 years old at the time.

The case has been turned over to a Harris County grand jury to determine if charges will be filed.

Police said investigators cracked the unsolved case last month when the robbery victim identified the person who shot the suspect.

It's possible, but I think unlikely. The article already said there were no charges filed on the shooter as yet.

Seems strange to me too, but without further details, it's anybody's guess. Perhaps the shooter was an illegal alien and feared being deported if he involved himself with the authorities. Perhaps he had a family and didn't want to risk being convicted of a crime.

Either way, better late than never, I suppose.
