Damn. 10,000 Turkish troops have moved into Northern Iraq to engage with Kurdish rebels. The PKK (The obligatory 3-letter acronym for angry youths who call themselves freedom-fighters. Seriously, why is it always three letters for these groups?) or Kurdistan Workers Party has been fighting in SE Turkey for years in a struggle that has cost over 30,000 lives.
That's more people dead than every horror we have covered on the front page combined. But, admittedly, not nearly as entertaining. When you talk about that many dead human beings, they become statistics, not tragedies.
The sad thing here is that this is yet another war over invisible borders. You have an area that is mostly Kurdish, but living under Turkish rule. Turkey isn't about to contract their border, and the Kurds aren't going to leave their homes. It is Kosovo, Iraq, Israel, and a dozen other similar conflicts. And all so unnecessary.
Abdullah Gül, prepare to be burned in effigy for invading Iraq without first exhausting all diplomatic efforts. You will now be attacked for the rest of time by angry Iraqis who base their anger on poor foreign policy choices. Oh, who am I kidding?
