The family of the Gerritsen Beach woman killed by a drunken- driving millionaire in Manhattan lashed out at the district attorney's office for letting him off the hook with a 16-day weekend jail sentence.
"It seems like it was just another bailout for a wealthy CEO, courtesy of the Manhattan district attorney's office," charged Jeffrey Minsk, the lawyer for Florence Cioffi"s family.
"There's no justice here for Florence and her family, which is the only thing they ever wanted."
Cioffi and her fiancé, William Mosca, were out planning her 60th birthday celebration in Tribeca last January. As she stepped out onto the road, she was struck by George Anderson's Mercedes-Benz SUV, which he was driving at 60mph.
Anderson, 48, CEO and founder of a software technology company, fled the scene. He returned 20 minutes later, but refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
The Brookville, L.I., magnate was charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and criminally negligent homicide.
The Manhattan district attorney's office chose not to go to trial last week, allowing Anderson to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges of DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.
In addition to the 16 days in jail he will serve over eight weekends, Anderson will do 250 hours of community service and pay a $350 fine.
"It's a rich man's sentence," said Mosca. "Sixteen days for somebody who was doing 60 miles an hour, intoxicated [and] left the scene of the crime?"
[...]
Mosca, 63, says he lost his "whole life" when his vivacious fianceé was killed.
"We did everything together. Now I just do things because you can't sit around in the house all day by yourself. ... I have her picture up ... I kiss her every morning." family_outraged_at_wrist_slap_for_dwi (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2009/01/15/2009-01-15_family_outraged_at_wrist_slap_for_dwi_sl.html)
Unbelievable. DWI is a huge devastating problem and here is someone because of position and money, gets out of even a trail. 16 days in jail...pffft. Talk about an insult, a punch in the gut. This poor man loses his wife and they treat it like he hit and killed his pet dog. DWI charges will never be stiff enough as punishment dealt out to those who should be made an example of are getting off with a fuckn' slap on the wrist. A shame, a real travesty.
Rest in peace Florence Cioffi. Your life was worth more than that. I know you are missed.
