5-year-old William Tiojai dies after drowning in pool

A 5-year-old boy who was found unconscious Friday in an indoor pool at the MCM Grandé Hotel in DeSoto has died, the Dallas Morning News reported.

William Tiojai was attending a party with several other children when the incident happened. A 12-year-old boy found William and brought him to the surface after realizing the young boy was in trouble.

An off-duty border patrol agent performed CPR on William after he was removed from the pool.

Poor child. I feel for the family.

Most hotels I have been in have giant disclaimer signs up, either about no lifeguard on duty or the hours which one is, and that no children are allowed in the pool during off hours/at all sans adult supervision.

Aside from safety itself, that is probably very much to protect them from lawsuit just like that.

I read about this earlier. So sad.

When my children were young and not able to swim very well, if there was a pool party, I was at the poolside watching them. I think it's just too hard for parents/adults to throw a party and watch all the children in the pool.

Does that include times that a childrens party is being held there? If it said in the party 'small print' that there were not going to be any lifeguards, then the onus is on the people throwing the party to make sure that there were enough adults to supervise all the kids, or to make it clear to all the parents that they were responsible for supervising their child.

This is very, very sad. A lot of kids are drawn to water (my 2yr old is obsessed with it). I feel for the 12yr old who pulled the child out of the water. He is a little hero, and will likely be haunted by this for ever.

Okay, so if the parents weren't going to keep eye on their kid, where was the arm floaties? Or those rings, whatever. If your not going to watch your kid at least give them a fighting chance. When my daughter was 5 I had a floating bathing suite, arm floaties, and the ring on her plus following her around the pool. Okay maybe a bit extreme, but it was her first time in a pool. And she was a bit scared. For additional cruelty, no one is allowed in the lake without an adult watching. (That sucked when I was a teen)

I am an evil cruel parent. Not a kid had a floatie anything or even a life jacket except when in a boat. Those things give a false sense of security and you should never take your eyes off a kid in the water - ever. We have a family cabin haven't lost a kid yet. However, they do tend to learn to swim at a young age.

If you don't want the responsibility of taking care of your kids, including watching them while they were swimming you shouldn't have them. There's no harm in not having floaties, if for one you know how to swim, and for two, someone is there to help you just in case. My daughter didn't touch the pool until she was 5. I plan on starting my son way sooner.

I want my boys to learn to swim. Water and I are not friends. I told my hubs that we must learn as a family, you never know when it will be useful or a life saving skill. My Nate is 5 years old and loves the water....I just can't imagine losing him this way.

Sounds like the parents were not around to supervise, but left him in others care.
Tiojai was taken to Methodist Charlton Medical Center and then to Children's Medical Center Dallas, where he died about 6 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

His parents were in their room at the time of the party. Police said other adults were watching the children. ...apparently not.


The parents must be beside themselves in grief...rest in peace little Tiojai.
